Default Luck (Skydance Animation)

Quote:
Think you know about luck? Thankfully, Bob the Cat is about to drop some truth. From Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation comes Luck, streaming August 5, exclusively on Apple TV+.

The film stars Eva Noblezada as Sam Greenfield, Academy-Award Winner Jane Fonda, Simon Pegg, Lil Rel Howery, Flula Borg, John Ratzenberger, and Whoopi Goldberg.

I have a sneaking suspicion that John Lasseter was Pixar and the magic went with him. This film should confirm or deny that and the trailer certainly looks very good.

Maybe, but Pixar also had mediocre films under him, especially ones that he directed himself like A Bug's Life, Cars and Cars 2.

So far this looks fine, not really remarkable. I'm waiting for their next film - Spellbound, which will have music from Alan Menken. And I'm definitely looking forward to Brad Bird's Ray Gunn.

A Bug's Life is God-tier man. And I unabashedly love Cars and Cars 2.

Basically every animation studio has its foundation stones that make it what it is and succession doesn’t come easily. There’s an inevitable decline. Pixar was founded by a group of people who deliberately set out to try something new, so they had to think differently. The new generation of people helming films there want to make the films they grew up watching.

Disney was never the same after Walt’s interest diminished over time and then with his death. The Nine Old Men weren’t even capable of keeping things going adequately. Things improved quite a bit later but even the best films of the past 30-35 years don’t have the same kind of ambition and significance.

Studio Ghibli had a potential third pillar in Yoshifumi Kondo but he died (and even then, he wasn’t that much younger than Miyazaki and came from an earlier generation of animators so by the time both Miyazaki and Takahata would be gone they’d be looking for a successor for however long Kondo had.) Yonebayashi, the heir apparent a decade back, did well working from Miyazaki’s story material but hasn’t indicated that much with his own Studio Ponoc after Ghibli temporarily shut down. The less said about Miyazaki Jr., the better.

I should say I haven’t seen the most recent Pixar films but they did little to interest me. They’re probably just fine but will I be missing much if I never see them? Probably not.

Yes, the two Cars films are definite low points on his CV.

As with Spielberg, there have been lousy films, but countered by many masterpieces.

And Ray Gunn sounds fascinating.

Enjoyed Skydance's short Blush and the trailer for this looks really good. Pixar's been feeling a bit moribund lately, though I did like Dug Days

I hope that one day Skydance becomes the next Pixar. I also hope that we could get more animation studios, would love more variety for animated movies especially if we could consistently get PG-13 and R rated ones for theaters.

Sony Animation has at least 2 of those in development/production!

Theatrical?

I forgot to add that those PG-13 and R rated animated movies would be theatrical releases.

Apple is usually pretty alright when it comes to releasing their films theatrically (Coda) so perhaps we'll get Luck in theaters for Oscar consideration
