Default Violent City (Charles Bronson) coming from Kino

Coming Soon!
• Brand New 4K Restoration!

Violent City (1970) aka The Family - Starring Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Jill Ireland, Umberto Orsini & Michel Constantin – Shot by Aldo Tonti – Music by Ennio Morricone – Co-Written by Lina Wertmüller – Directed by Sergio Sollima.

About time. One of my favorite Bronson films. Epic score and cast, with some good old fashioned Bronson violence.

A damn fine and underrated action movie. I’m pleased and not too surprised Blue Underground let this one go as it doesn’t seem to fit in with their remastered and 4K lineup.

It better have a slip and coincide with a Mr. Majestyk upgrade. Also this movie has one of the coolest endings ever.

I totally forgot there's an upcoming Mr. Majestyk reissue. One of my fav Bronsons.

This is from the set of "Violent City". Look at Bronson´s forearms.

I wonder if Kino had to pay the kings ransom for this release as they always mentioned the rights holders just wanted way too much money.

Maybe they decided to pony up since the numbers for GBU were impressive and they've also been on the roll with reissuing and remastering the MGM owned Bronson titles.

You have to remember there were two versions of the film:

1. THE UNCUT INTERNATIONAL Version (104 minutes)—originally dubbed in Italian.
2. THE DOMESTIC US CUT (96 minutes)-the one re-edited by United Artists (the version I originally saw at a drive-in in 1972)—note here—International Co-Productions originally released it early in 1970-71, then after Charles Bronson and Telly Savalas became bigger stars (Bronson, especially)—UA, the studio that brought Bronson his greatest success in the 1970s, took advantage of his star power (as well as the success of Paramount’s THE GODFATHER) by bringing the film in much wider release - this is the version that was called THE FAMILY. I remember this shorter print starting with the then-UA/Transamerica logo.

It was only when it was initially released on DVD that the full version was issued, but because the cut 8 min. were never dubbed, they remain in its Italian language with subtitles.

Thanks for clarifying this. I suppose I should have known that there might have been different cuts for Europe vs the U.S. but didn't. That certainly explains the version that I & others have seen on Amazon Prime Video that switches between English & Italian. It obviously would be cut #1 that you described. I would assume that what Kino will release here would be cut #2. I assume that it would be too much to expect them to have both cuts on this release for us.

I guess it's possible. Either way, the good news is that it's finally happening. I do hope they pick up Death Wish V to complete the series here.

I also wonder if they picked up any other titles in this deal or just went for Violent City.

The Italian BD of that cut is 104 mins at 25fps 1080i, so should be over 108 mins if 24fps and 1080p.

The Blue Underground DVD is 109 mins

It's important to note that the Blue Underground DVD is also missing quite a bit of the English-dubbed audio. I contacted them about this 15+ years ago. Large sections of dialogue presented in Italian were recorded in English and can be found on both the VHS "The Family" release and the Japanese Laserdisc (which I just finally hunted down about a month ago).

I really hope Kino delivers both versions of the movie . . . and restores some of that English dialogue to the hybrid audio track.
