Arrow Index of pop-outs by 3D movie with time stamps

This will be mostly an ordered list of live action movies starting with the best pop-outs and ending with the worst. The things I have considered when ordering the list is:
  1. How many pop-outs
  2. the relative strength of each (how far out of the screen does it reach)
  3. the quality of pic (is it clear or fuzzy)
  4. how long it stays on screen
  5. and the framing (pop-outs work better when they don't hit the border of the screen)

Also, for comparison, I consider anything that reaches half the distance or more from the screen to me, strong, one quarter the distance, medium, and anything less as mild.

My current rankings

Cool list of pop outs in that great 3D film, thanks for taking the time to list it all. The bug antennae in the beginning, wow, very strong 3D.
Have you seen the animated Thunder and the House of Magic or Turtle's Tales 2 from NWave? Those are known for strong pop outs.
Hansel & Gretel 3D I remember having a lot of pop outs, but the fast kind.
Ghostbusters 2016, I counted 22 strong 3D pop outs.

Note: Zivouhr is referring to Journey to the Center of the Earth. I've altered my first post substantially so it isn't clear what he was responding to.

I have very few cartoons but I saw the first Turtle tales on Netflix and it had quite a few pop outs. How did you count Ghostbusters? Did you take notebook to the theater?

Default Drive Angry

Drive Angry

This movie was unique in that the pop-outs seemed more vivid in freeze-frame. I could have
listed more but it would have been repeat shots of virtually the same thing in a back and forth
flurry of action. Fun, ultra violent, yet tongue in cheek movie that is nearly constant strong 3d.

I will continually update my first post to reflect what order I rate the movies as far as pop-outs are concerned. The emboldened titles will have links to the posts that enumerate them.

Default Hugo

Hugo

Maybe my favorite 3D movie of all time. A ton of pop-outs, great depth
enhanced with sharp camera angles, vivid characters and a good, thoughtful story. If you
don't like this movie, you're stupid!

I could have added about 10 more but they violated the edge of the screen too much to enjoy as true pop-outs.

*this was halfway across the room to me, which makes it at least in the top 10 of popouts for me.
I'll know better when I finish my collection.

Good job with this Damon!

What size is your screen? Are you passive or active?

Thanks, feel free to add, if you have the time. The screen I'm using right now is a 60 inch LG plasma active display. My projector is down while I'm refinishing my theater room. Then I'll be using my Epson, also active, with a 12 foot display.

Nice lists Damon.

While a notepad would be useful, I didn't plan ahead and I used my fingers to count each time I noticed a strong, very obvious 3D pop out in Ghostbusters. I made it a point to start counting from the start of the movie. So I actually kept my fingers held for the whole movie so as not to lose count. When I got to 11, I just reset to 1 finger and then went up to 22 that I noticed. I wasn't counting strong 3D layers, just out of the screen pop outs. There are quite a few pop outs that did not reach out very much at all, and those I made a point not to count.

29. 118:25 sparks medium
30. 126:06 bird strong
plus another dozen or so in the closing credits (not the titling itself which I disregard)
I apologize if I missed some. This is the first movie I did this for and it may be the king of pop-outs in my collection
Nicely done. This approach is very informative for us lovers of pop-outs, and as you said, more useful than an overall impression. Thanks.

The lists of pop outs definitely make it clear what to expect in a 3D film.

For Ghostbusters 2016 3D, I'd say 22 strong 3D pop outs, and maybe 60 to 80 or more pop outs total, many occurring onscreen seconds within each other.

Default Rest in Peace Department

R.I.P.D.

This was a rather disappointing affair. Men in Black, oops I mean R.I.P.D.,
had mostly very mild pop-outs or they happened so quickly they seemed
mild. Freeze frame analysis of this flick is useless since it resolves
to a 2 dimensional shot.

I will continually update my first post to reflect what order I rate the movies as far as pop-outs are concerned. The emboldened titles will have links to the posts that enumerate them.

HTML Code:
no. Time Subject Apparent strength

1.	43 Hand Mild
2.	1:O1 Gun Strong
3.	8:53 Gun Medium
4.	9:50 Sparks Mild
5.	16:22 Spit Medium
6.	16:32 Guts Medium
7.	30:04 Refrigerator door	Mild *
8.	31:23 Gun Strong
9.	48:39 Harpoon/hook mild
10.	49:57 Gun mild
11.	1:04:50 Gun mild
12.	1:09:56 Gun medium
13.	1:10:58 Gun mild/medium
14.	1:13:35 Gun mild
15.	1:21:07 hand medium
*This one surprised me since it was clipped by the edges of the screen.
That generally kills the effect for me. Or maybe after a half hour, I was starting to feel sorry for the movie.

Thanks.

Some of the 3D in RIPD is very good, medium to high medium layers, though I would have to watch it again for the 3D pop outs.

I don't know why they disable the 3D when pausing, unlike some better programmed 3D blu rays.

I agree. I liked the way those "freeze" shots played in 3d among other things. The pop-outs were just underwhelming though...at least it had some.

My favorite scenes in RIPD take place in the final act, when all of the ghosts/monsters/aliens start breaking out of the portal. Actually, that happened in Ghostbusters too.

I totally agree that a 3D pop out, unless it's super fast, shouldn't be clipping the edges of the screen, but should be as centered for as long as possible to really hit the effect home.

Men in Black 3 3D, I'll have to watch that again. I don't remember a lot of pop outs in that one, but nice, medium 3D.

Default Thor: Ragnarok

Thor Ragnarok

A surprising number of pop-outs but almost all extremely mild.
This is another film that disables 3d when paused.

edit: As Smaugone pointed out, you can press the "down" button on some remotes to retrieve the 3D in pause mode. I tested that theory on this movie and was tempted to upgrade several pop-outs which upon closer analysis, were stronger than the credit I gave them. On the other hand, we don't usually watch movies in pause/step mode and it wouldn't have increased my overall ranking of this movie.

I will continually update my first post to reflect what order I rate the movies as far as pop-outs are concerned. The emboldened titles will have links to the posts that enumerate them.

I'm going to do a few classics. The telescope in It Came from Outer Space was worth all the pop-outs in R.I.P.D.

Default The Bubble

The Bubble

This is easily the king of pop-outs in my list so far. Not only are they numerous, they are also well defined and often quite strong which also makes them gimmicky, but I say bring it on!
