ummmmm, no, of course not. netflix and amazon prime are good for a one time watch if you want to see something you haven't seen, but never a substitute for the joy of ownership (and the quality)...I didn't spend $10k on a home theater setup to feed it McDonalds

I buy "must own" movies/tv shows regardless if they're available on streaming for the superior quality. I'm glad these will be made available, so I can watch the one's I haven't yet. If I like them, I will eventually own them.

I've pretty much stopped buying TV series altogether. I just don't get back to them very much as there's always something new I want to see instead. I collect Game of Thrones from HBO on Blu but that's about it. I love lots of other shows of theirs, but I just can't see sitting though The Wire, Rome or Deadwood again in their entirety and I pretty much consider them all near perfect shows. As an HBO subscriber, with Comcast on demand, I can pretty much watch any of their shows in 1080i for free and I still don't find the time for repeats.

I've cut way back on buying TV series except for my absolute favorites. Currently, I get HBO GO, so that has excised the need to buy most of their series. I'm cutting back to basic cable in October (when my cable bill will swell to well over $200), so having these shows available on Amazon Prime is great.

The availability of something on streaming doesn't affect my blu-ray buying decision.
Ultimately, it comes down to this: I simply do not trust anyone else to guarantee long term access to the shows I want to see. For me, guaranteed access to my favorite shows means taking MY blu-ray off the shelf and putting it in MY player when I want. Their are too many variables over the long term for me to feel comfortable trusting various segments of a delivery network. Will amazon prime ALWAYS have access to the HBO library? What if I don't like the cost of amazon prime in three years? What if some actor sues because streaming profits weren't in his contract and the show gets tangled in legal limbo? What if my ISP decides they deserve a cut for all that bandwidth? My ISP once did a system "upgrade" overnight that rendered my wireless router inoperable. Maybe none of those things will ever happen. Nevertheless, when I hold that disc in my hand, I feel no concerns. |

![]() My sentiments are identical in every way! I remember that I said the exact same thing once in one of these "streaming vs Blu-ray" threads. From my very simple and straight forward post, someone actually only read me as bragging about how much money that I have "wasted" on my home theatre setup. They also went on to tell me that having spent that much on my home theatre, I [to paraphrase] "should be using it to its full potential and not limiting my content choices by restricting the medium by which I watched stuff." HAHAHA!!! Talk about missing the point entirely! ![]() |

For older shows like The Wire and some of the Sopranos, streaming could be just as good or even better than the DVD releases. I think the HD stream of the Sopranos was better than the DVDs looked, obviously not better than the Season 6 Blurays. And I'd much rather stream in HD the first time I'm watching a show than make a blind buy, even if I'm nearly positive that I'll like the show. I'm definitely planning on streaming Rome and Deadwood over the summer.

Same here. Now matter how great they were, I don't have the time of working my way through several seasons of a show I've already seen. There is always plenty of great new stuff to discover. I have bought some favourite shows and they all sit there watched or have been resold.

If a show is available via a streaming service (which is basically ALL tv shows these days) I don't see a point in owning it on Blu-ray anymore. It just sits there on your shelf collecting dust.
Even with movies, I'm headed towards going almost all streaming. The novelty of collecting is losing it's luster. |
