Default Wonder Woman

A new Wonder Woman game is in the works from Monolith Productions, DC, and Warner Bros. Games. The title was briefly teased at The Game Awards on Thursday night with a trailer that didn’t show much, but it sure made a splash with fans of the DC Comics superhero.

Wonder Woman is a new single-player, third-person, open-world action adventure featuring an original story set in the DC Universe, according to a release. The story will follow Diana of Themyscira as she seeks to “unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world.” Like in one of Monolith’s previous games Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Wonder Woman will use a set of mechanics called the Nemesis System.

The trailer shows the heroine floating with her glowing gold whip. We didn’t get much in the way of story, other than a voiceover speaking to Wonder Woman: “My daughter, a new threat comes to our shores, and I must call you home,” the voice says. “Restore what has been broken.”

They’ll really wrangle an article out of any slither of info won’t they?

Monolith are a decent company so at least it seems promising.

Considering it was announced so long ago and never had any kind of updates or news, this ain't surprising.

Yeah four years and not even a single screenshot? Makes sense. Must have been a disaster behind the scenes.

I swear there was a story no too long ago that the original game director was either fired or stepped down. This caused the game to have to scrap all momentum and material and start over anew. Which is a shame since this could have been an easy reskin (in a way) of Shadow of Mordor.

There was so much potential and this is going to be one of those video game stories where did this go wrong. Look for a PMG or Noclip documentary in a few years.

While I understand the sentiment I wish we’d get to only seeing games the year they launch. Really tired of seeing rendered or in-game footage trailers that show zero gameplay 3+ years from launch.

I read yesterday that the Nemesis system from those LotR’s titles is under copyright until I think 2036. So we’re not going to see anything like that implemented for a long while.

The Nemesis system is overrated. So the Warner Bros. patent is no big loss. But I am surprised they had so hard a time making a Wonder Woman game. You can give her flashy DMC style combat (having her swap between lasso, sword-shield, and Godkiller mode combat) mixed with Metroidvania style exploration, and an epic story of Greek gods and monsters. The game practically writes (programs?) itself.

Sounds like the actual developers were in an impossible situation.

Quote:
The list of issues here is a long one. Monolith, a wonderful, storied development studio that last October celebrated its 30th anniversary, had been toiling for eight years on its next game after 2017's Shadow of War. Credible reports from Bloomberg suggest it spent the first three of those in a "standoff" with Warner Bros. Games leadership, which knew the game it was working on was a new IP, knew it didn't want a new IP, but also didn't actually, apparently, do anything at all about that, until it forced the studio to scrap it entirely in 2021.
Quote:
The developer subsequently lost its entire senior leadership team as a result - its director of art, director of technical art, vice president of creative, director of production, director of technology management, director of gameplay engineering, and vice president and studio head. As Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier notes, the studio was then "put in the impossible situation of having to simultaneously rebuild a studio while starting a new game from scratch."
Quote:
It then spent around three more years on Wonder Woman, moving from something using its famed Nemesis system (locked away in the IP dungeon by Warner Bros. since 2017) until it became clear that didn't really work in this entirely different, owned-license world, and was rebooted last year.

It is impressive how badly run WB is as an entire company for the last 10 years or so, regardless of who owns it.

I've said it before but i genuinely can't believe how many at that executive level just keep "failing upwards" when you have a regular Joe that can lose their entire livelihood you have these morons who swing upwards sometimes with even more pay or nary a cut whilst banking millions in redundancy payments etc.

That said, gaming is due a massive shakeup soon and i hope all these talented devs pool together into a proper company and don't sell out to these corporations that are going to piecemeal and destroy them.

A trend has started in some areas where former devs have come together to do that but needs more small to medium level studios that can do that to get proper games out.

Hey, that's no way to talk about the President!

Seriously, though, none of these idiots running these companies have any idea or desire to actually grow a business. They can't fathom thinking about the next decade, only the next quarter, and their only goal is to squeeze as much money as they can as quickly as possible. And this especially causes problems in AAA game development, as costs and dev time increase exponentially with every new generation. Maybe if WB bothered diversifying their lineup with smaller games, licensing their IP out to other studios so their core teams can focus on the big stuff, they'd feel less of a sting from losing $200 million dollars on Suicide Squad. Or maybe they could trust the talent that they hired and are paying for, and listen to them when they say live service games are a dead genre that can't sustain something with that much money dumped into it.

Damn. So, if I read between the lines, the eventually cancelled Wonder Woman game was most likely Monolith attempting to retool their original game into the game WB wanted, in order to not scrap all those years of development. That sucks. Especially since, even if Monolith reforms under a new name, whatever original IP they developed under Warner Bros. becomes the sole property of that company. So all of Monolith's hard work is lost anyway.

Monolith are under WB Games umbrella so regardless of what they make, WB Games owned that. New IP or otherwise.

Definitely a lot of less behind the scenes but i do genuinely believe that something went seriously wrong when even me and other posters have got a rough overview of how the game should have been set up to play and so on.

Maybe we will see leaks soon enough from stuff the laid off developers did work on beng shown publicly.

I know. That's why I said "That sucks. Especially since, even if Monolith reforms under a new name, whatever original IP they developed under Warner Bros. becomes the sole property of that company."

I think it's fairly straightforward. Monolith made a new game to leverage their strengths. All the WB Games suits cared about is cashing in quick. Hence why they didn't want to gamble on an original IP. Monolith already sank 8 years developing a game that WB no longer wanted (no dev team works 8 years on a game that didn't get the go ahead from on high) and tried to fit their square peg into the current regime's round hole.

Maybe. I mean we did eventually see that gameplay footage of Ubisoft's shelved Prince of Persia Redemption.
