Default Death Stranding Director’s Cut now on Xbox Series X/S Today, 11/06/2024

So, Death Stranding Director’s Cut surprise dropped onto the Xbox store this morning, for $19.99. It’s a game I had started a few times on PlayStation, but I’m going to give it a purchase and give it more time. Very excited to see where this leads, as more third party exclusives go away.

I thought it was weird that Death Stranding had a Windows Store release but the Director’s Cut did not.

Coincidentally a coworker was discussing whether or not Kojima’s Xbox experiment will go to PlayStation, seems likely to happen. Now I wonder if DS2 will also be multi platform…

Kojima now owns the Death Stranding IP. I would assume this means, outside of any timed exclusivity deals Death Stranding 2 has with Sony, we will eventually see DS2 on Xbox.

DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC includes HIGH FRAME RATE, PHOTO MODE and ULTRA-WIDE MONITOR SUPPORT. Also includes cross-over content from Valve Corporation’s HALF-LIFE series and CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. Stay connected with players around the globe with the Social Strand System™.
Is that "cross-over content" a new thing? I don't recall that on PlayStation, but I didn't finish it so maybe it is there and I just didn't get to it yet.

Also wonder if that ultra wide monitor support is Xbox and PC.

Just can't get on with modern Kojima games. As much as people complained about the amount of cutscenes in the older MGS games, those games had a certain rhythm and flow that made them very compelling to play. Could blast through one of them in just a few sittings. Almost like reading a good book or watching a good TV season. The presentation of the stories alone were just so compelling.

I can appreciate his attempt at trying to make more compelling gameplay, but it felt to me he threw the baby out with the bathwater in regards to the story. It just loses too much when the amount of cutscenes are halved and the story is told primarily through audio diaries. Not a fan.

Looks like Death Stranding was removed from the Microsoft Store to make room for this Director's Cut, really hate when games get delisted.

Is there any advantage to playing the original over the new version?

If you want less content.

As per DS2, I think Sony probably already made a timed deal with Kojima. That said, I wouldn’t be at all disappointed if it went everywhere Day 1.

It's more about access than advantage.

But that's my point. Is there anything about the original version that would want to make one access it instead of the new version?

EDIT: I'm not trying to be snarky BTW. I'm not sure what the differences between the two versions are. I've only played the Director's Cut version.

I honestly don't know if there is a reason to go back to the original, but if one were new to the series the only place you have the option do so is on PlayStation. Both versions had physical copies and both versions are still available digitally. It's probably no big loss, but it's nice to have a choice.

Anyway, I have a tendency to like the original versions of things and it is a rare occasion when a director's cut (or remaster or remake) is better in my eyes.

I’m sure this won’t silence the devoted, but Kojima demonstrated Xbox can play the best looking PS5 games. Decima runs great on Xbox, gameplay is indistinguishable from PS5/PS5 Pro with all three running at 4K/60; even Series S is a solid 1080p/60.

At this point saying Horizon: ZD or FW can’t run on Xbox is an insult to the developer, not Xbox.
