Default The Munsters (1964-1966) Appreciation Thread

The Munsters don't seem to get much love or recognition in this forum, so I wanted to remedy that. Considering all the Universal Monster fans here, I thought this fact would be of interest:
Quote:
The costumes and appearances of the family members other than Marilyn were based on the classic monsters of Universal Studios films from the 1930s and 1940s. Universal produced The Munsters as well and was thus able to use these copyrighted designs, including their iconic version of Frankenstein's monster for Herman. Other studios were free to make films with the Frankenstein creature, for example, but could not use the costume and style of make-up (flat head and neck bolts) originally created by Jack Pierce for the 1931 Universal Studios film Frankenstein. The make-up for the show was created and applied to the actors by Bud Westmore, who pioneered many make-up effects and designs for many of the Universal monster movies.
I also saw that someone hand-colored the opening, which I thought looked pretty great.

Grew up watching these episodes (re-runs) all summer breaks. Along w/The Addams Family, Gillian’s Island, on TBS. Brings back great memories. I too would buy these on BD if ever released to support the cause.

They do! I'm about halfway through season 1 watching one or two episodes a night with "Murder, she Wrote" when the insomnia kicks in. I'd definitely be down to grab Blu's should they be released.

I too would immediately buy a Blu-ray release but until they do I will continue to cherry-pick episodes out of this collection.

The Munsters was a fun watch but it'll always have the stigma of trying to jump on The Addams Family bandwagon.

Really? I hadn't heard that before. I thought they both debuted within 6 days of each other

Quite the opposite. ABC passed on The Addams Family pitch but once they heard Universal was filming The Munsters, they called David Levy and asked how quickly he could get a pilot together. Both series premiered in the fall of '64.

I liked the Eddie Izzard pilot as well... A shame it wasn't picked up. I'd like that to get an official release.

Good timing on this thread being boosted since Rob Zombie is in the midst of his new Munster's movie.

Just a few days ago I completed working my through the DVD set of The Munsters, and a couple months back I did the same with The Addams Family. I had never seen the two Munsters movies previously; Munsters Go Home isn't too bad, but wow...Munsters' Revenge is pretty difficult to get through, but I did it!

As I watched the series as an adult, I was impressed both with the Herman/Frankenstein makeup which is really good, the way Fred Gwynne made Herman so believable even when he goes a little over the top in tantrums, and the comic timing/banter/energy between Gwynne/Herman and Lewis/Grandpa...very Laurel and Hardy or Abbot and Costello-esque. Good stuff!

People should be aware Shout Factory put out the Munster, Go Home! movie on Blu-ray. I'd love seeing the entire series on BD but I doubt it happening.

I think it's got a good shot. It's a popular series and there's only two seasons. My worry is that it would end up at some place like Mill Creek and be one big mess.

better millcreek than nothing, Id love to have this in BD, and MC for all the agro they get, they've improved lately

Personally I was always of the munsters rather than the more "adult"/intellectual addams family. Watching an episode always makes me forget the real world for half an hour, its good, decent, wholesome fun

Loved The Munsters and The Addams Family.

Must see TV for a kid in the 60s!
