Default Favorite Non-Oscar Nominated Performances: Actor, 1928

As the title of the thread suggests, we're looking to pinpoint the Next Best Celebrated Acting Performances of film history. Plenty of great turns get ignored or forgotten through the sands of time, and this is a quick way to review and vote for our favorites.

This is for the North American calendar release year of 1928, so to save us clicking on Wikipedia, the following Oscar nominees are exempt:

Best Actor - Emil Jannings, The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh
Richard Barthelmass, The Noose and The Patent Leather Kid
Charlie Chaplin, The Circus

Best Supp. Actor - award not established until 1936

Anything else is fair game! You may notice that the choices are primarily Leading roles, but I'm not going to disallow other selections. It doesn't seem fair or sensible to quibble about Lead/Supporting categories.

Feel free to discuss these or other choices, 1928 the movie year in general, or any other rankings or opinions.

Thanks to everyone participating in these crazy polls! Cheers!!

I love the seemingly effortless charisma of Willy Fritsch in Fritz Lang's "Spione". And the guy transitioned into sound beautifully, sustaining a long and successful career in Germany.
But I've yet to see anyone look as convincingly, hopelessly smitten as Conrad Nagel was of Garbo in "The Mysterious Lady". The long first section of that film - with both stars operating at full tilt - represents screen romance at its headiest. So he gets my vote.
