Default Saros - developed by Housemarque

Coming 2026

While they only showed a cinematic trailer, I can’t help but get excited for what they release after Returnal

Thank goodness Sony didn't waste Housemarque on live service garbage like they did with so many studios.

For a second I thought that was the pilot from Halo Infinite, but at no point was this character an obnoxious tw@ so it must not be the same guy...

The tagline of the game is ‘Come back stronger’ so definitely a roguelike

Returnal tied with Demon’s Souls are my favorites ps5 “exclusives”

Sure Returnal looks like the typical cinematic PlayStation experience™, but it actually plays as good as it looks, and not trying to be movie. No long cutscenes and endless yapping, no forced slow walking while bickering with a companion, etc..

Hopefully the devs stick with that approach

I hope this one is a bigger hit than Returnal because Housmarque deserves it. Returnal should've sold way better than it did. It's still probably the best non cross gen exclusive on PS5.

I think this was one of the coolest trailers of the State of Play, this and Tides of Annihilation.

Didn’t it go to Plus pretty quickly or am I imagining that? I know I played it but I didn’t buy it

That trailer did nothing for me. All it told me is that they are likely recycling gameplay elements from Returnal. That, to me, is neither good or bad until I see actual gameplay from this title. I am not dismissing this game, however. I am simply not swayed by CGI teasers.

Agreed. I was left underwhelmed by it. Felt like more of everything that gets shown off at this showcases.

EDIT: I would also like to say I'm pretty sure the trailer didn't mention that the character is played by Midnight Mass actor Rahul Kohli.

Normally I would agree but IMO Housmarque has earned the benefit of the doubt because of their track record. Their consistence in quality title after title has only increased. When I see the Housemarque logo, I get excited, even if it's attached to a CGI trailer! Can't say that for every developer but Housemarque is definitely one of them!

The director in the video after the trailer mentioned that

I’m hoping this clicks with me more than Returnal did. I do love Rahul Kohli so that’s a positive!

As far as a sequel to Returnal, I'm sure they'll do a good job if most fans were happy with Returnal. It doesn't look like a game for me, so I passed on it despite the hype.

Plus they didn't even show any actual gameplay. Just a cutscene CGI trailer unfortunately, which means nothing as the graphics will never look like that on PS5. I don't know why they persist with that stuff like many developers. The time and money spent making CGI trailers could've went into improving the game.

CGI trailers can take time, money and a lot of effort to create, and none of it is actual gameplay, and often not even featured in the game itself. Ubisoft is guilty of that all the time. Wasting lots of money on CGI trailers.

All I think when I see CGI trailers is, "Where's the actual game?"

Housemarque revealed another dark and twisted bullet hell shooter yesterday at PlayStation's State of Play show, confirming that Saros is building off of Returnal's fast-paced action and die-die-learn-die-succeed cycle. But this time the developer was quick to point out that Saros will also let you carry resources and upgrades between runs, unlike Returnal.

In Returnal, every time you died (which was probably often), the main thing you retained was more knowledge. Saros is a little more generous, though. "A key gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable," a new blog post explains. "After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to 'come back stronger' to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa."

Not that it matters but, are we sure that was a CGI trailer? I know it said "not actual gameplay" but is it possible that it was still in-engine?

It is a bit nebulous, but Sony is pretty good at labeling the sources for their previews/trailers. If you look back to the Intergalactic trailer, it has the label "Captured on PS5. In-game cinematics." I think if the Saros preview had been captured in-engine, Sony would have mentioned it.

Hope they change their mind about the permadeath, and then they'll get another sale.

I hope that this is the single-playerest game in the history of single-playing, and that it requires you to be offline in order to play it.
