Default Little Shop of Horrors Reboot

Quote:
World building is a full-time job for Greg Berlanti, the man who spearheaded the ever-expanding Arrow-verse on The CW. But he has some directing chops, too. His last feature film was in 2010 with Life As We Know It and he directed Sigourney Weaver in the pilot episode for USA’s Political Animals. He’s set to return to the director’s chair for a film about DC hero Booster Gold, but today brings word that he’s adding a cinematic revamp of Little Shop of Horrors to that list.

Deadline reports that Berlanti will helm the new movie musical based on a script by Matthew Robinson. Little Shop of Horrors originated on the stage as a musical from director Roger Corman, a script by Howard Ashman, and compositions from Alan Menken. It was famously adapted for the silver screen by Ashman for director Frank Oz in 1986 with a cast, including Rick Moranis, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Ellen Greene, and Bill Murray.

Berlanti’s film is described as “a fresh take” on the story, which tells of a man who raises a plant that turns out to be carnivorous. He then starts killing people in order to keep it alive, but it’s a musical, so there’s plenty of camp.

But before Little Shop of Horrors, the filmmaker will next helm an adaptation of the young-adult novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, with Nick Robinson (Jurassic World) in talks to star. The film tells of a closeted gay teen who’s blackmailed by the class clown when he discovers a revealing email. On top of that, he has a Booster Gold movie in development that’s said to be set outside the DC Extended Universe.

News of Little Shop of Horrors comes after the recent boom of musicals on the small screen. It began with The Sound of Music, broadcast live on NBC, which they followed with Peter Pan, The Wiz, and now Hairspray Live!, which will bow on December 7th. FOX followed suit with Grease: Live!, The Passion, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Now ABC is getting in on the game, after announcing earlier this year to be tapping Disney’s vast library for its own live musical television performance.

They’ve been less frequent on the big screen, but Disney has Marry Poppins Returns planned for next year, and Universal is readying Wicked for a movie in 2018. For those who don’t already live in a major city or don’t have any inclination to go back and watch the original Little Shop of Horrors, these adaptations help make musicals accessible to the general populace — which is why I say more power to Berlanti.

I love the original but I've never seen the remake (I've never been a huge Rick Moranis fan so that obviously didn't help).

I've almost bought the digi a few times though so who knows, maybe one of these days.

Of course, it's always possible I'll see the reremake before the remake.

Little Shop is actually my favorite musical, so I'm very curious to see how this comes together. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you ever sit down to watch it, Octagon.

Well, I guess I shouldn't write it off completely seeing as the musical that I love so much IS a remake, as is Carpenter's The Thing... still can't help feeling skeptical though...

Ellen Green reprised her role from the stage. These two new people look horrible. No thanks.

Josh Gad I could see working as Seymour, he can play a dweeb and be charming but Wilson, though funny I can't see working as Audrey. Its a shame they can't just cast the girl who played Queenie in Fantastic Beasts, I can see her as the cute but vulnerable object of Gad's affections and if she could sell herself having chemistry with Fogler in that she can do the same with Gad in this.

That said this feels like another utterly unnecessary remake. There is not really any room for improvement here or innovation. The 80s film already did that for the original film and with practical effects no less. Audrey 2 will probably be all CGI and even then I doubt anything will top the bonkers original ending Frank Oz shot the 80s film.

Rebel Wilson? Audrey II will choke trying to swallow her at the end.

So, they're going to take one of my favorite movies and remake it with Rebel Wilson? Lucky me.

You know what? Josh Gad is okay. I liked him in Beauty and the Beast, he could handle it.

Rebel Wilson?

Was there a budget cut in casting? Holy shit.

He'd be better off using Carlos Valdes and Melissa Benoist.
Probably save a few bucks, too.

I honestly want a straight remake of the original Corman production.

Not another adaption of the musical.

The seems like a good idea about as much as remaking The Wicker Man with Nick Cage was a good idea.

I'm a huge fan of Little Shop of Horrors and would easily put up there as one of my favourite musicals. Josh Gad I can at least see in the role but I too would of used someone from his tv series. I would of skipped Carlos and gone with Jeremy Jordan (Winn) He was the surprise vocal chops during last years musical episode. Plus I think he has more of that weakling/geek look for Seymour. If not maybe Jake Gyllenhaal could reprise the role

As for Rebel Wilson cast choice

I don't think she has that great of a singing voice and doesn't fit the role. I know he wants to change it up a bit but I dont want to see them stray too far from who we already know her to be. Benoist would be an ok choice or surprise me with an unknown.

Ellen Green created the role of Audrey on stage and screen as an innocent, charming and a beautiful woman who is the object of Seymore's desires but outside of his league. Once we get to know her, we become sympathetic to her low self-esteem since she settles for someone as scummy as the Dentist who abuses her. Then we realize she secretly adores Seymore and they make the most perfect couple, rescuing each other from a life of skid-row misery and fulfilling each other's dreams.

I'm sorry, but Wilson is anything BUT innocent and charming. Every role I've seen her play, she comes across as crude, brassy, and deserving of someone as scummy as the dentist. It's actually her trademark, to present herself as funny white trash. I cannot see her successfully fooling an audience into the type of character that Audrey is.

I'm afraid people would be ROOTING to see the plant eat her and would cheer when it finally happens.

I mean no disrespect, but this role is NOT for Rebel Wilson.
