United Kingdom Eyes Without A Face (1960) 4K UHD (BFI Films)

BFI will be releasing Eyes Without A Face (1960) on 4K UHD on October 13th!

Quote:
Eyes Without a Face (4K UHD)
Director: Georges Franju

After his daughter Christiane (Edith Scob) is horribly disfigured in a car accident he caused, the brilliant and obsessive plastic surgeon Dr. Genessier (Pierre Brasseur) is driven mad with guilt. As atonement, the doctor, aided by his loyal assistant Louise (Alida Valli), lures young women to his secluded chateau and takes them to his secret laboratory to surgically remove their faces with the hope of grafting them on to his daughter's ruined features and restoring her former beauty. But will Christiane allow him to succeed in his dangerous experiments?

Eyes Without a Face is at once cruel and tender - highlighting Georges Franju’s unique blend of pulp, horror and poetry, it has, in the decades since its release, been a major influence on filmmakers such as Jesús Franco, John Carpenter and, more recently, Pedro Almodóvar.

Extras

  • 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)
  • New audio commentary by film critic and writer Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
  • Audio commentary by film critic Tim Lucas (2015)
  • Monsieur et Madame Curie (Georges Franju, 1953, 14 mins): a study of the life and work of the Curies, told through the words of Marie Curie
  • La Première nuit (Georges Franju, 1958, 20 mins): a young boy spends a night in the Métro
  • Les Fleurs maladives de Georges Franju (2009, 50 mins): an overview of Georges Franju's career
  • For Her Eyes Only - An interview with Edith Scob (2014, 17 mins)

As a fluent French speaker, I'll be able to weigh in once the inevitable BFI vs Criterion subtitles debate ensues

I'll be scratching this title off of my Criterion November Sale list!

(Although I do prefer the Criterion art)

So if the Criterion is superior, then you'll never know and you can continue spreading narratives about how people just say Criterion is always better no matter what, and pretend you aren't in some sort of echo chamber by... posting anti-Criterion sentiments while propping up international releases from other labels on Blu-ray.com.

Stuff like Criterion's Seven Samurai and Wages of Fear are better than competing releases from others. To the point where the Criterion releases were accused of having fake grain because people didn't expect them to be better and couldn't understand how they were at the time.

Don't forget Yojimbo/Sanjuro (not trying to start a flamewar, just teasing)

I imagine that this will just come down to a matter of taste. I prefer the BFI Kurosawas for their inky blacks and excellent contrast, but I respect Criterion's insistence on keeping SDR masters in SDR. I will for sure be replacing the subtitles regardless of translation since I continue to be the BFI font's biggest hater.

I think this was pretty much expected to happen, which was why I didn’t add it to the Aussie Umbrella 4K splurge I had several days ago, and it’ll be a definite preorder.

I really wish BFI’s subtitles were better. You’d think a label that cares this much about a quality presentation would at least put a little more effort into them. I still feel a little burned from pre-ordering their Seven Samurai. I’ll probably wait and see how it fares before I order this or the Criterion.

I believe the BFI's translation subtitles are generally fine, it's just that their subtitles for Seven Samurai were older and credited to one individual, while Criterion's subtitles are credited to four people and were revised for Blu-ray and then again for 4K UHD. I don't know about their subtitles for the other Kurosawa releases, but the subtitles for Mikio Naruse's Floating Clouds were excellent, as were those for Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear.

I would trust the BFI implicitly for quality translation subtitles, especially for a French-language film. I will definitely be picking this one up.
