Question New HD format by M$ - WMV HD?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...video/dvd.aspx

WMV HD

Quote:
All the DVDs on this page are available at retail now. Each package is a two-disc DVD set featuring high definition versions of the film (720p and 1080p) in Windows Media High Definition Video (WMV HD) and full surround sound on a single DVD-ROM using Windows Media 9 Series. WMV HD offers nearly six times the resolution of a standard DVD. Check them out today.
What bitrate are they using? Any reviews?

This is not new, I've had the Motown DVD for years (and that one is neither 720p nor 1080, it's 576 x 1024),
and the T2 is on the Extreme Ed (817 x 1440), etc.
There must be some reviews out there of a few of them.

This was an earlier attempt (WM9) to compress HD to fit into a DVD-9

(Sometimes it seems like they are still trying *cough <10 Mb/s VC-1 cough* )

I thought WMV-HD was just an branch of WMV-9 like VC-1, a different implementation of SMTPE, but much the same, just using lower bitrate so they can be broadcast over the air, and through cable. It is of poor quality in comparison to MPEG4/AVC-H.264 as WMV-9 was never made for low bitrates like AVC.

This has been around for many years. If you want more clips (not the complete movie) that are free to download try http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...tshowcase.aspx
These have been around since late 2003 (not all titles). There is no way this will ever see the light of day as it has been compressed down to fit on a DVD, but still requiring a new "DVD player", or as now being pushed by M$ on your computer.
To steal Maxpower1987's tag "HD DVD hasn't launched in Australia, Blu Ray has, but HD DVD are still claiming victory"
