Thumbs up PS3 upconverts oldray DVDs

My friend who owns a PS3 and introduced me to Blu-ray didn't know that his PS3 upconverts "oldray" standard DVDs. All this time he was using a non-upconverting Sony DVD player for his DVDs.

I asked him, don't you use your PS3 to watch your DVDs upconverted? His jaw dropped and he stampeded to his living room to check out a DVD on the PS3. Low and behold, it looked much better than on the regular DVD player. He was embarrassed for not trying to play a "oldray" DVD in his PS3.

Now, he never uses the regular DVD player.

Now if I could only convince him to get Dance, Dance Revolution for the PS3 I will have it made.

I just gave away my old DVD player last night

But I really think SD DVDs look horrible...so much so it's almost painful to watch.

in all honesty, as much as i love and adore my ps3, the upconverting sucks! It really makes some sd dvd's look worse than they did before! Thats why i have kept around my HD-A2. the hd dvd might be dead, but the hd-a2 is the best upconverter available!

I have to agree about that, but then again, I can't stand watching anything that is not
HD anymore.

It is torture watching regular cable TV.

It is acceptable to watch HD cable TV.

It is barely acceptable watching upconverted oldray DVDs.

It is sensory overload to watch Blu-rays.

Hmm which titles specifically?

My experience has been a bit different in that regard, but most of my DVD titles that I watch now are Animations, which the upconvert was designed specifically around.

For me, I have a dedicated Sony upconvert DVD player (DVP-NS75H). Yes, I do sometimes watch oldray standard DVDs. It does a beautiful job upconverting and looks acceptable on the 52-inch 1080p Sharp Aquos.

I do not use the Sony BDP-S300 to upconvert oldray DVDs. It doesn't do as good a job as the DVP-NS75H. I use the S300 only for BDs.

I don't have a PS3 or a Wii --- yet. But I hope to get both in the near future.

Ive discovered that star ocean ex looked really nice upconverted.

But I dont have the monster of a tv that yall do most obvious.

Star Oceans collection of traditional and cgi together really came out
well.

Hmm, the PS3 usually gets pretty good marks for upscaling. It scores higher than the HD-A20 that I have and that seems pretty accurate from what I've seen. But, yeah, it might not be the absoulute best but "the upconverting sucks!". Gimme a break.

That's your opinion. I think the PS3 does a great job at up converting.

Now let's never utter the word A2 again.

the A2 is a great piece of equipment as is the ps3, from my experiences the PS3 is not a very good upconverter. I played planet earth on the ps3 (old ray) and thought that it looked horrible, played it through the A2 and it looked amazing, also played it through another upconverter i have in my house (a magnavox) and it looked better than the PS3 too, i have had the same results with other movies too. The ps3 is a phenominal Blu player just not a good upconverter

I just watch SD DVD movies on my media PC. It displays SD DVDS better than any upscaler I"ve seen thus far.

Here's something that really bothers me about the PS3: Why doesn't it upconvert 480p or 1080i video on BD discs to 1080p? Instead, it outputs them at their native resolution. My Mits WD-65833 is extremely sloooow at switching between resolutions and at HDMI handshaking; I always end up missing the first 3-5 seconds of whatever video I'm watching. If the PS3 upconverted everything to 1080p, this problem might take care of itself.

Brett, I have both Denon DV2930CI (uses the same Reon chipset fro upscaling as Toshiba players) and PS3 sitting next to each other. The quality of upscaling in my opinion is pretty close. I would give Denon a slight edge over PS3, but to be honest as an upscaler PS3 is a lot higher value.
