SD TV shows on Blu-ray?

Just checked thedigitalbits, bill said the new doctor who might be shot on SD, so there is no much point to buy it for BD release.

However, if they managed to put more episodes into one disc, there would be some reasons to buy.

i.e. Friends, (I don't know if these was shoot on HD or SD, I never saw a HD friends show though.) 12 episodes per season, 22 minutes per episode. So basically 8 hours play per season. A D9 can fit 3 hours movie, a dual-layer BD is more than 5 times of capacity of a D9. So you can put a whole season of Friends into 1 BD-50, plus commercials, bonus features etc.

It would be good to see WB release complete version of Friends in 10 BD-50 for $150 or less.

I dont know how the whole progress works but I think they can upconvert it, movies like john wayne blu-rays those obviously werent shot with HD cameras...

They were shot with film, which has a lot higher resolution than 1080p.

I've seen a 1:1 graphic chart before comparing the resolution in a SD DVD to an actual movie screen and the SD image looked way tiny compared to the movie. HD images were obviously much larger but even the 1080 wasn't half the size as the original film.

You can find some TV shows actually shot w/ film that can reformatted to a true HD picture. Joss Whedon's Firefly is an example.

Yes, most films are very high resolution. The chemical grain on the film decides the resolution. However, older 16mm films could be similar or less than 1080p. Also, colours and contrast of older films are not good as newer ones and therefore could appear as low quality on blu-ray.

I love to see Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond and Friends on blu-ray.

Also wish to see the British classics such as Yes Prime Minister, Faulty Towers, Mr. Bean and Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

However, I am not sure whether there would be any PQ improvement of these due to blu-ray.

All the Britcoms were shot on analog SD video.

And no, they won't be making SD Blu-rays

Depends on how you define "older"

3 strip technicolor still produces some of the most amazing color ever, and the resolution on it is also superb

But I don't think they would try to cram as many episodes as possible on Blu-ray.

The studios want to make as much money as possible, so they would probably decide to space out episodes on discs rather than consolidate them.

Anime series are notorious for this.

Appleas and oranges. Anime studios parcel out the episodes because they're paying a per-episode licensing fee. To make their money back(and a profit), they need to generate X amount of revenue. This is up to $50,000 an episode(before translation, dubbing, disc production, marketing, shipping, royalties etc), and given that an anime disc that moves 30,000 copies is a best seller, you can start seeing the problem. With hollywood TV shows, the episodes are already paid for, allthey have to cover is any music costs and the cost of putting it on a disc

It's severalfold

1- You can press 6 DVDs for a season of TV for the same price as 1 Blu
2- Percieved value. Basic marketing psychology is that 6 discs for $49.95 is going to sell better than 1 or 2, because the casual buyer feels there's greater value there. They're still going to charge $49.95 no matter what, because you're paying for what's on the discs, not the discs themselves.

Northern Exposure was hypothetically re-transferred to HD along with Knight Rider, A-team, and a bunch of other Universal shows for the DVDs.

Firefly has not always been in HD.

Now the series is being made available in HD. Twentieth Century Fox Television has remastered the show's 35mm print to 1080i high definition for a Sept. 24 debut on UHD, a network spokesperson confirmed.

I've often thought the same thing. You could probably get the entire series of some show onto a couple Blu-ray discs in standard definition, but I doubt it'll happen. Blu-ray is synonymous with high definition now, so the odds of standard definition releases I would think is minimal.

Even if it would be convenient to have a whole season of a TV show on 1 or 2 Blu-Ray discs, I seriously hope that never happens. What a cluster f*ck it would be if you couldn't be certain that the Blu-Ray disc you were about to buy was SD or HD.
