Default HD-DVD Cracked 100%.

Welp, this is great news for HD-DVD! Right before CES, which is already a huge hall full of Blu, now add the shame of every studio and CE company laughing at toshiba for having their format cracked first. Good thing Blu-Ray uses AACS, BD+ and Watermarking. This is going to look great on toshibas resume!

BTW, over at AVS, one of the zealots said that this was great news, and now more people will buy hd-dvd players to play copies! HAHA! I love it! Couple that with the fact that you STILL cannot buy a HD-DVD burner, making the files useless without a HTPC, just makes it all the sweeter. Their stupidity truly makes HD-DVD the low class format it was destined to be.

CES is going to be very interesting.

Fox's and Disney's primary motivation to go Blu-Ray only was the better encryption. This would tend to confirm their feelings that they should stay away from HD-DVD. I wonder how this is good news for the Toshiba product.

Perhaps now we'll be getting a announcement from Universal. They've got to be insanely pissed that their titles are now going to be distributed all over the net for free in 1080p.

How funny would it be to rip HD DVDs of Universal titles and then burn them onto Blu-Rays!

of course, the current discs don't have the extra layer of protection implemented yet. correct me if i am wrong. however, it would mean all BR discs are susceptible as well.

however, implement another layer and now we're talking...

*IF* that was really cracking AACS, then it will affect both HD DVD and BD. If what is hacked is the device key, all HD DVD and BD titles could be decrypted by that very same device key. If the revealed one is just a title key, it only works with a specific title.

Studios may deeply think about this threat and stop or slowdown releasing titles. So, it's not a good news for both camps. For user stand point of view, backup/copy is attractive word, but HD title release is still immature stage and studios could stop releasing at anytime. Is the situation good for consumer that content can be copied, but no content to be copied? It's too early...

Its great news. AACS is all HD-DVD has for protection. Blu-Ray has many layers of protection and is much more secure for the long run making people go through hoops to actually PLAY the goods. So studios will check the books and see which format to go with, and it wont be the one that has no alternative protection method.

Hopefully, one effect this might have is to wake up the suits at Universal.

You could always reauthor the titles to BD and burn them to a 25GB disc.

edit: oops apparently an unoriginal thought...

It depends on whether this hacks around the DRM, or actual removes it. BD may require the player to check for the ROM-Mark for any protected content.

How tasteless are the postings of a certain MS VP that clearly wants BD to be affected too?

You'd think that someone in his position wouldn't be encouraging the hackers to move onto BD, and showing HOPE that the intellectual property of BD studios is also now in jeopardy.

Gary

P.S. Imagine a hole in a defense system being responded by the Secretary of Defense with "Oh, it will affect Great Britain too".

This could be bad news for both HD-DVD and BD, although I believe it's much worse for HD-DVD.

Edit: <3 amir btw.

Once again the Fudsters are at it. This makes cracking BD useless crack one and they change key, so unless you have plant in all the mastering plants passing out the keys for every disc, it ain't going to be much use.

Imagine if it was blu ray that was cracked!!!!!!!

Well it may provide a jump in the number HD-DVD players purchased, at the cost of HD-DVD disc sales. I wonder if Warner and Paramount will be much slower to release on HD-DVD if they are going to be easily cracked.

From the vague reports I'm not so sure that this is a total crack as there was a reference about new keys being released, if there is a reliance of leaks for each title this will be useless and is not a 100% crack. If however the keys can be recovered from the disc's (even if it takes a computer a month or so) then it's game on, (or off pending on your point of view).

N.B. the method someone came up with of capturing each frame is not really a feasible method of copying. Trying to sync the audio will be a real problem, just as a starter.

I really think Amir should be in some meetings today. Even if this crack makes it easier to eventually crack Blu-ray, the fact is, it is HD-DVD that is now cracked, hacked, whatever. To say this is in anyway good for HD-DVD is silly. Hopefully Blu-ray isn't cracked.

The point is that AACS has a workaround now. HD-DVD has NO OTHER means of protection. Blu-Ray has AACS as well, but also BD+ AND Rom-Mark on the pressings. Which means its going to be a LONG time before a replicator can press blu-ray discs and sell them on the streets of new york city. BD50 blanks are still over 40 bucks as well, so you can forget that as a way to resell them. HD-DVD is in serious trouble, as far as im concerned. Coulndt have come at a better time, CES 07 is going to be a nightmare for anyone in the HD-DVD camp.

The keys are apparently found in the clear in the computer memory when using a software player.

That is the vulnerability as I understand it.
