No more "standard definition" - Blu-ray Forum

I propose that we discontinue referring to dvd as standard definition. We all hope and believe that blu-ray will become the new standard for home theater entertainment. Therefore, I believe dvd no longer deserves to be described as standard definition. From now on I will refer to dvd as low-definition. Perception is everything and this title shows dvd for what it truly is: old and outdated. Who's with me?

Not I.
Technically low definition is what you see online and portable devices, like ipods. They have a much lower resolution and lower quality than DVD, which is technically "Standard Definition". There is also High Definition and Ultra High Definition (4k).
So just call it SD or SD DVD or DVD or what not, but low definition is a different thing.

VHS - low def
DVD - standard
Blu - Hi def

my 2 cents, and yes I still have some VHS's that aren't out on dvd/blu MST3K anyone?

Except DVD, in fact, IS standard definition.. HD is not standard yet. Even then we want to call it HD cause it sounds snazzy and that is what makes people buy it. If Blu-ray was called "standard def" it wouldn't sound very exciting would it?

Ah, yes, MST 3K classics. Those are some of the most amazing movies. I love their commentary.

PAL and NTSC are different, but not that different. Resolution n PAL is higher than NTSC, but bitrate on NTSC is higher than PAL.
They balance out. But BOTH are "Standard Definition".

Low def is for things that truely are low def, lower than what a standard TV uses... internet, ipods, phones, etc. DVDs (PAL and NTSC) are standard, as is VHS although the quality is lower. BD is High def.
Ultra High is only on film and special equipment.

First of all, I was kind of joking.... (kinda like those nerdy jokes about NTSC standing for Not The Same Color) What do you mean about the bit rate is higher on NTSC? The bitrates are variable, and nothing to do with PAL/NTSC!!! These formats were around long before digital! The color burst on PAL is 4.43Mhz, and NTSC is 3.58Mhz. The color is noticably MUCH better on PAL than it is on NTSC, the reolution is 576x720 vs 480x720, technically they are both standard definition, but I grew up in Australia, and only just moved to the US... gosh, it's like having a fly screen over the TV and the color signal turned down, almost like it's completely washed out.

One of the HD channels was selling a BD of Sunrise Earth and they kept throwing out the DVD word with it. There was no DVD for sale. I think a butt load of people will order this not realizing that it won't play on their DVD player. Talk about confusing J6P out there.
