Basically came out in new's publications that since HD DVDs were out, that was their plan. Anyone know anything about when that is going to happen? Any word within Best Buy if you work there?

Best Buy is only hurting themselves. Consumers have a lot of choices for Blu now. Online prices are down dramatically since Fall 2007 and new release prices can typically be found under $20 with cataloge prices sometimes getting fown to the 415 mark. Perhaps Best Buy feels that since the are the one BM that has the largest slection, they can justify high prices. But with free shipping and Wal-Mart's free site to store option there is no need to pay their prices. If I want something the day it is released, I will buy it at reatil for a high price and order it online with a free shipping option and then retun it to the high priced retail store.
Also it's good to keep checking the adds every week for sales. I got the recruit at target for $29.99, 2 weeks later (this week) on sale for 19.99. I went for a price adjustment and they were reluctant since it was past time, but when you have a 90 day return window the option of buying new on sale and returning on non-sale recipt is a very powerful motivator. |

Since they are the #1 HD retailer, they definitely won't be dropping prices. I don't like their pricing, but they definitely have the best selection of any B&M retailer. And they do run alot of BD sales. One thing I don't like is the timing of some of these. For example, The Bucket List was on "sale" for $29.99 during release week. Yet, the week after, they decide to price it lower at $24.99.

The one time I tried to price match they did. I don't think they actually called Target, despite picking-up the phone because they would have known the Target price was different.

Best Buy is a retailer like Circuit City and even target that usually has prices 5.00 below the retail give or take. For titles that retail for 29.99 or 28.99 their sticker price is 24.99 and that works on 39.99 prices = to 34.99 also. This is how it has usually been since I can remember even back to VHS and then to DVD. Their are exceptions per certain titles for sure. THis isn't anything new.
If the studios lower the retail price then the in store price will drop also. An example is The Fly of Edward Scissorhands .. I think these used to retial for 39.99 each and have dropped to retail 29.99 and most stores have dropped their prices accordingly. We all want cheaper prices but those will eventually come when retail prices are lowered and Blu Ray becomes the new DVD of choice for the majority. Online is cheaper for the most part. I sometimes take advantage of Barnes and Nobles buy 2 get one free if I feel like it when that happens or 30% off Borders Books Coupons I even used a 40% off coupon on The Dirty Harry Set. and got that one for about $85.00 ish. |

A-men there......Online is the way of the future, but I believe within a few years Wal-Mart will help drives sales in that category and get prices down where BB and TRGT have to compete

It's shocking how Best Buy still tries to sell BD's for $29+.. I don't even go to their Blu section anymore..
Amazon will destroy all... Walmart is the tru king of retail even though their prices are still a little high but much less than Best Buy. |

I have no idea why people will not take advantage of Amazon Prime, it beats Best Buy hands down. I usually get my new release the same day it is out on retail store or maybe just one day behind. There is no getting in my car, wasting time, spending money in gas and hope you find a copy. Then I got a 30 days price garantee with Amazon and if I see the price lower all I need to do is a click of a button and here's my refund. Try that with a retail store, you have to get in your car, drive to the store and wait in the return line and hopefully the refund is big enough to justify all that. I use to buy most of my DVD from Best Buy and at one time Best Buy is the place to go for new release and they usually discount them on the first few days of release. Now their price is maginal ridiculous and they have not gotten a dime from me yet on Blu. I would have brought a lot more from them if their price is reasonable. |
