Default NetFlix Blu-ray problems

My last two movies (Covenant, Prestige) have arrived cracked (one crack) along the edge. Of course the disc is unplayable.

Has anyone else had this problem?

All of our netflix bluray discs have been perfect. No scratches, no cracks and all have played perfectly since we started using the PS3 as our main playback device.

All of the Netflix Blu-ray movies that I have rented have been perfect. The problem I have is the Blu-ray movies usually come from a distribution center from another state. This unfortunate problem delays delivery from 4 to 6 days. And the thing I don't get is Netflix HQ is like 10 miles from my house.

No problems. In fact, I'm getting more and more satisfied with Netflix Blu-Ray since I wrote in to complain to them 2 months ago that all the Blu-Ray were 'Long Wait' or worse. Since then, I have not had to wait for any Blu-Ray title.

I just think some people are trying to create a BD issue after reading that topic. But, I could be wrong.

These cracks are supposedly on the outer edge. Two people said they won't play, but they should at least play for a while. The laser reader usually reads the information it needs to get started from the beginning of the disc (the center). Therefore, it should at least play for quite a while before running into trouble.

That's why I have a hard time believing this. Now, someone is going to say it plays for a little while then it stops because of a crack.

no probs thus far. I always check for scratches and either I'm receiving brand new copies or the extra coating is great

I can see where a disc could be damaged in the mail but I have received 32 disc from Netflix and there has been no problems. There was a thread over at AVS BD Software section and several posters (trolls ?) claimed to have a very high percentage of problems. One new poster claimed six of his first ten rentals were cracked. Finally I posted the data from my Netflix rental history and asked others that were claiming a high rate of problems to do the same. The thread soon dried up.

I've been with netflix for three years - had one cracked disc and one scratched disc that wouldn't play. Not bad considering - my local Ballbuster (Blockbuster) always had a worse ratio.

My only complaint was that it took WEEKS to get The Prestige - but my goodness was it worth it! (Bought it just yesterday).

I really only deal with amazon.com nowadays and the only time I've had a damaged disc is when the push/release button for the DVD inside the case is broken and the disc slides freely inside the case...

I've never had a 'cold weather' crack and I believe the only way this can happen is if you happen to leave a BD movie or game inside your car overnight....and it's in the middle of winter....

then....maybe you could have a cracked BD....but one thing is for sure...I will keep my awareness up if I accidentally leave a BD inside a car while intoxicated...

I've had very good success with netflix and bluray, i get the same turn around time as regular dvds (1 day) and no playback problems yet. Even when they say short or long wait i still get the ones from the top of my queue within a day after returning the last movie. The only problem I had so far was they sent me the standard DVD of Open Season instead of the bluray (sleeve said bluray though).

I resent your implication that I am 'trying to create an issue'. I love blu-ray and netflix. I get an error message and my PS3 won't read the disc at all. That just shows what you (don't) know.

hughring I did do a search (on Netflix) but didn't do one on broken/cracked discs. This is exactly the problem that I am having.

Have you reported the problem to Netflix? What has been their response?

I live in northeastern Ohio and it gets really cold up here in the winter. I have rented at least 30 BD movies from Netflix and I have never had a problem playing any of them. Our mail arrives around 2:00 and those discs are sitting out there 2 to 3 hours before I can pick them up. Just lucky I guess. By the way, whatever coating is being applied to the BD discs has worked out just great. Every one of my rentals look like new with no scratches whatsoever and if there are any fingerprints on them they just wipe right off.

Monster House was the only disc I have received from them so far that has been unplayable. I didn't notice able cracks but the PS3 wouldn't recognize it for some reason.

I literally have gotten a few thousand discs from Netflix and i've only had 1 disc that was cracked and maybe 3 or 4 that wouldnt play because of being scratched. Other than the fact of the limiting the new release allowance I have been happy with them.

I live in Akron. (I used to live in Geauga County).

Out of all of my rentals it has only happened twice and I did report it to Netflix.

this has been HEAVILY DISCUSSED at AVS forums. Blu Ray Discs are susceptable to very cold temperatures. When this occurs they get small 1/4" cracks along the edges moving inward. This causes the disc to be completely unplayable(it must check entire disc integrity before playing because I can never get any playback when there is a crack).

This is not a netflix or blockbuster issues. It's a blu ray issue. I am an avid blu ray supporter and a blockbuster total access subscriber and during the extremely cold winter months in Milwaukee, WI I was getting discs with these cracks consistantly. I even got some that I sent back so I did my part and broke them in half so blockbuster would stop sending them out. I recommend everyone do the same regardless of service. I am sure there are discs still out there with these "cold cracks."
