Default R.i.p Gene Upshaw...

While I'm sure the OWNERS weren't too broken up; I'm sure the players will be. He did a lot for the players and the league. RIP Gene you did good on and off the field....

Gene Upshaw didn't care about the retirees from the NFL. I'm sure he will not be missed.

He concentrated on himself and no one else.

I hate to speak ill of the dead, but he was not a well liked person.

I have to admit, I haven't been following the NFL as closely the last few years. What effect will this have on a collective bargaining agreement or the salary cap? Wasn't he wanting to get rid of it(salary cap)?

Nobody wants to get rid of the salary cap, because if you get rid of the cap you get rid of the floor. If the cap goes football becomes like baseball where you have teams with $200 million payrolls (Dallas, New England, Washington) and teams with $30 million payrolls (Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Buffalo). The effect this has on the collective bargaining agreement is unknown. The person who takes his position could work with the teams and hopefully get a new agreement reached, or the teams/union could take a hard stance and we have an uncapped 2010 followed by a lockout (unlikely worst case scenario). Upshaw worked well with former commissioner Tagliabue, but it didn't look like he got along with Goodell.

^ I agree the NFL is a very good organization unlike MLB which is a joke with a wannabe commish. The salary cap must stay in the NFL.

I just love it though when a 60 mil team spanks a 200 mil team...

Go Tribe, beat those Yanks!

97 Marlins vs Yanks.. nice.. in 6 baby!
