Default Coexistance

while looking on the threads i notice someone saying that we might haveto coexist with hd-dvd (although i think that couldn't happen ever seen as were winning) but what would you views be if they did have to coexist, personally i would be really pissed off. nobody call me a troll as im just wondering about peoples opinions

look back at beta vs vhs, one won and one eventually disappeared. coexistence will only occur for a short period of time initially.

VHS had 100% studio support. If Blu-ray doesn't get there (or HD DVD for that matter) we will have another DVD Audio/SACD fiasco: a niche product.

coexistence will not win out. Blu-ray will prevail sometime in 08.

Agreed 100%. I believe that CES 2009 will be the latest that the format war will be announced as undecidedly over by all parties.

I cannot see Universal not releasing on Blu-ray sometime in 2008.

Yep, if Universal and Paramount don't eventually make Bluray the highdef format will become a niche product much like laserdisc.

There are going to be ALLOT more Blu-ray players sold in Q4 right into next year.

However its still not bullet proof though so the BDA needs to keep pushing hard. Especially if Microsoft does in fact decide to bundle in the HD-DUD drive in their XBOX. They will do everything in their power to prolong their life support so we can take NOTHING for granted.

...

no that would Be HD DVD getting absorbed into Blu-Ray..the fact that Blu-Ray is already has a use outside of Just Movies it is HD DVD that will have no use and will be a niche market unless they branch off HD DVD into other Markets that is what will happen to HD DVD not Blu-Ray

The current situation is totally unlike that war. People who want both will get both with players that play both BD and HD-DVD.

I don't get your point. This is completely similar to Beta/VHS. We are seeing stores starting to favor Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. That happened with Beta. Sony kept producing their beta players (same as Toshiba is doing), eventually the VHS pressure grew and Beta went overseas. (Exept now overseas are choosing Blu-Ray, so death is it's only option.)

IT doesn't matter what you want....retailers are eventually going to pick a side. They are not going to buy for DVD and two highdef formats. There is not enough floor space for most retailers.

It's also impossible to coexist with studios picking sides. People seem to think Fox, Disney, and Sony is going to magically start making HD's. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Either Bluray wins this war or I fear the highdef format will go down the toilet. We are quickly approaching that too....customers only have so much patience before they lose intrest.

I agree that both formats can't coexist, but software retailer floor space is not the reason. Suppose Warner picks a side; in that case there would be no titles available on both formats, so no "wasted" floor space (for discs) as against a single format.

What IS nice to see is that retailers going into Q4 are already giving the nod to Blu with more shelf space, end-caps and displays. We have the price drop onthe PS3 as well as the 40gb unit. Then we have week after week of great movie releases. The momentum is def on our side.

Coexist cannot be an option, it is causing consumer confusion and holding HDM back.

Co-existence is not an option. HD DVD MUST die. Re: storage capacity/bandwidth limitations adversely impacting PQ/SQ (e.g. "Transformers" lack of lossless audio).

I think the B&M stores are going to pressure the studios to pick sides. Dual inventory is non-optimal from their POV.

Of course, my opinion doesn't count for a whole lot in the movie industry.

I agree blu-ray needs to win sooner than later...but I don't think the highdef format will be down the toliet as more and more TV broadcasts are going highdef and with the highdef movie channels(HBO, Cinemax, SHO, Starz...etc) why would people want to go back SD on a movie they've boughten or have rented?

I think as HD becomes more prevalent in cable/SAT tv, the interest in a Highdef home media will become stronger and stronger, and thus the importance of blu-awareness!

Ban the troll!

Kidding, kidding.

I reiterate the wisdom of Beta-Guy. This would cause "The Warner Effect" (I coined that phrase.) They make the movies to the least common denominator, HD DVD in this case, and simply burn it onto blu. This was done with "300". Why bother with blu-ray at that point? May as well stick with HD DVD.

This should not be tolerated. It would pull the rug from under Blu-ray. It was a nice compromise at first, but if I am paying for a movie on blu-ray disc I demand blu-ray quality, dammit. Otherwise, they can keep it. <Folds arms in defiance.>
