Default Need new receiver!

Okay, so I'm ready to pull the trigger on a receiver and some speakers now. It should be noted that I don't mind waiting for prices to come down, and I do not mind starting off with a 2.0/3.0/2.1/ setup.

Quality of the speakers / receiver is important, but I want to keep the entire purchase under $1000. Although I could go a little over that if need be.

I notice that Amazon as the Onkyo 606, 705 and 805 for $347, $479 and $599, respectively. I'm open to Denon and Pioneer also.

I live in an apartment so I don't need anything insane - but I do want a receiver that will last for many years.

Okay - so what receiver should I get?? I'd like the receiver to say under $600 - but can go a little over for a great deal.

Also, any speaker suggestions to pair with the receiver??

Thanks ahead of time!

I would go for the Marantz 7002. Before you jump on me for the price know that you can go to www.accessories4less.com and buy it factory refurbished. It comes with the exact same warranty as the brand new ones. My dad did this and you honestly couldn't even tell that it was a refurb, it looked brand spankin new!!! He has had it for 5 years now and never a drop of problems. I highly recommend it!!

I would go for the TX-SR606 and save yourself some money if you're in an apartment and don't need the extra power. Use the money on some speakers and a nice subwoofer.

If you want that extra power for later in life when you get a house then perhaps look at the 805. I LOVE mine!

Not sure how the new Pioneer 1018 stacks up against the Onkyo 805, but I have heard some good things about it.

At $1,000...start off with a receiver(like some of the ones being suggested here) and with the rest buy 2 quality speakers for your fronts. That's all you need for now. Then in a few months...add the Centre Channel or the 2 rears or the subwoofer.

Go slow and buy quality....NOT quantity. You'll regret it if you do.

Yea, good point. Speaker technology doesn't really go anywhere fast. It's not anywhere near like computer tech that rolls over every five minutes. Take your time and get what you think sounds good, not what people on the forums think sounds good. Take time and go listen to stuff.

I checked out the Pioneer and lets face it - its styling is well ahead of the Onkyo's. I was also suprised at the low price...what's the catch???

Edit: I found the catch. No switched outlet, no trigger. I am still seriously considering it. Just surprised that I can get it for so much less than the Onkyo 805

I had been considering the 606 - but I've convinced myself that I want something better. I had all but purchased the 805, but now I'm wavering after looking at the Pioneer 1018.

Right on - my thoughts exactly. Can't stand to have junk when it comes to electronics.

You're right - but just my luck some revolutionary breakthrough would occur in speaker technology

Im all for the Onkyo 805, I would if I could...

But others are right about investing in good speakers. Will get you a lot farther.

I am really happy with my 606. Granted it is the lowest priced reciever in your post, but if you consider your budget going for a higher end reciever and then only having 200 left for speaker is not a good idea. It would be like spending 2k on a top of the line bluray player and then only having enough money for a standard definition television.

I was in the same situation when I bought my gear and settled for the 606 (if you call 4 hdmi ports and 1080i upconversion and decoding of all high definition audio codecs settling). Then I went out and bought some decent polk speakers (monitor 70's and C2) and still stayed under the 1k budget. Speakers will last you longer then a reciever and are worth the extra money.

Now you went and made me second guess myself. You are saying the 805 is better than the Pioneer 1018?

Edit: I never even thought of looking for an owners thread - I'm goin through it now....thanks!

Okie....here we go......

And for those of you with PS3s....yes...my player does indeed say "DTS-HD MSTR."

This thing will look super sexy once I get it all hooked up and clean. Sorry for the crappy picture - I have a old school digital "camera," and I use that term loosely!

Nice. That's the one I wanted earlier this year, but I couldn't justify $1K+ at the time, so I bought my refurb 705 for a song.

Drop your picture size to below 600x480 on PhotoBucket to make it easier for us to see.

And...I'm very disappointed that I received no come-back from the smart-@55 comment I left on your other thread with photos!

Whoops - didn't think about the resolution thing. That's not an issue for me on my widescreen Sony laptop.

And which thread do you speak of? I shall not let you go unchallanged!
