Default DD 5.1 vs. DTS 5.1

Whats the difference? I can't tell a difference at all. Which is better?

DD has all 6 channels compressed into a 640kb/s stream. DTS has it compressed in a 1.5Mb/s stream.

This might seem off topic a little, but is it true that if I hook up my PC Surround sound speakers to my PS3, I'm not really getting true surround sound?

no, not necessarily. It depends how you're connecting the speakers and which cables. If you're using digital cable then you will be getting surround sound.

If your speaker system has a decoder (and most have) then it should pick up a signal and appropriate the outputs accordingly. If not then it will produce a phantom surround (which ProLogic was to a degree).

Let me do some digging on your speakers and I'll get back to you.

Those speakers don't have an optical connection anyway. Most you can do is hook them up with the game adapter they came with.

Ahh, right. I had a look here and I see it simply has an RCA left+right input (analogue white and red). This means that it only produces phantom surround and not true surround.

Essentially it converts a two channels signal into a 5 channel signal by putting what it thinks should be at the back at the back. Whilst 'different' to 2 channel this is not actually true surround.

Easiest thing to do is grab a second hand DD/DTS receiver or processor from ebay and use the Logitech speakers with that.

Thanks. Now I know what they meant when some people said it wont be true surround sound. I got the optical mixed up with the other cord. (too many cords) I'll be sure to pick up a different receiver in the near future.

So anytime DTS is available....I should use it I'm guessing.

DTS generally, has a little more information coming into and from the Rears and the steering of the rears tends to be a little stronger - you can tell right from left sounds more easily but there are a few cases where the DTS LFE track is way overblown and over modulates causing your sub to fart at levels you thought were perfect before. In 95% of movies I have, I prefer the DTS.

Gotcha, thanks. Yeah I just assumed DTS was a bit better since they only offer it on a hand full of movies. I'm trying to find some more movies in DTS ES 6.1 Discrete, that really sounds good with my setup, too bad that wasn't offered more....

The majority of people can't tell the difference between DTS and DD in a blind test. Either one works well. If DTS sounds better to you use that, if you can't here a difference then use the one that is easiest for your equipment to deal with. Personally I use DTS output from my PCs with an Auzentech card. I prefer it over the DD encoding of the card. Either way though, whatever 5.1 source I listen to, I apply DPLIIx processing to it to create 7.1 out of the 5.1 signal. it sounds much better than just 5.1. NowlListening to only 5.1 doesn't sound right. It just sounds like something is missing in the sound field.

I'd like to see a blind test take place. I'm thinking DTS would win hands down...

Yeah, my receiver offers a bunch of variations to choose from. I keep it on PLIIx whenever possible for the 7.1 because it does make quite a difference there.

I have to agree. DTS is superior to DD, a lot more dynamic. However it's not as widely used as DD which is a shame.

Agreed, total shame. And further agreed with above re: DTS ES. Get your hands on a relatively rare copy of the movie Gladiator with DTS-ES 6.1. Nothing in DD's arsenal can even hold a candle that one in standard DVD world... On that note, here's hoping Gladiator makes it to Blu-Ray with a DTS Master Audio track. Now that would be REALLY nice.

Maybe a closer battle between Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio, but I haven't heard enough of either yet to offer a qualified opinion, but yeah, as for the stuff thats out there in standard def today, I think DTS is pretty much untouchable, actually...
