Quote:
SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION (1990) (Limited Edition of 3,000)

In the mid 1950's, a young husband and wife become human guinea pigs for Project Samson, a top-secret experiment exposing them to massive amounts of atomic bomb radiation. But when the couple dies in a shocking "accident", their infant son grows up to be a man whose rage can cause people to suddenly explode into flames. Now the government's murderous experiment may not be over... and one man's use of his horrific 'gift' has only just begun.

Starring cult actor Brad Dourif (Child's Play, Ragtime), along with Cynthia Bain (Pumpkinhead), Jon Cypher (Food of the Gods, Kingfish Caper), Dey Young (Rock 'n' Rol High School), Dick Butkus (ANY GIVEN SUNDAY), Dale Dye (BOYS IN COMPANY C), and Melinda Dillon (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), this explosive thriller co-written and directed by Tobe Hooper, director of the horror classics Poltergeist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Now see this terrifying motion picture from a brand new HD master!

Special Features:
  • Brand New 2014 HD Master
  • Watch this in Katarina's Bucket List Theater

Unfortunately, this disc has some compression issues through out. It seems some frames are unaffected while others are drastically affected. Here's a comparison of the pocket watch at the beginning of the film:

On a side note, anyone noticed that the filament from the red light bulb makes it appear as if there is a person sitting down with their arms and legs crossed?

For some reason, this movie has always been on my radar and I have never had the pleasure of watching it. The Anchor Bay dvd is hard to find, but just realized Code Red released the Blu-ray. $31 after shipping seems a bit steep for a title that has no special features or anything. Are some of those who own the Code Red Blu satisfied with it?

I like this film a lot. It's pretty odd and it doesn't always work, but I find it highly enjoyable. I buy everything that Code Red puts out and I'm a big Tobe Hooper fan, so I might not be the most objective person to ask.

If you can spring for it, you may want to consider adding a couple of other titles to the order and save on some shipping.

A really good Code Red title at SAE is RETRIBUTION. It's very well made and judging from some of the titles in your horror section, I think you'd like it:

I love Tobe Hooper as well, so I'm trying to track down all the films I haven't seen of his yet. I watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 again the other night and it kind of started this Tobe Hooper kick, so I'm gonna try to track down this one because I love Brad Dourif as well. The only other Code Red title I really wanna acquire is Just Before Dawn, but then again, I haven't seen many others of their titles. Thanks for the heads up about Retribution! I haven't heard of it, but I'm always open for new horror titles to check out!

If you're on a Tobe Hooper kick, I'd say go for it! It's one of his more interesting titles.

Just Before Dawn is also excellent and well worth checking out at some point.

This film is a train wreck, but an extremely entertaining one for cult horror fans, and a juicy role for Brad Dourif. I'm very glad I picked this limited edition up. You haven't lived until you've seen the John Landis scene.

I genuinely like this movie. Way more than The Funhouse or even the original TCM (which I find wildly overrated). I like Hooper's more insane works though, like this and the Cannon trio.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is my favorite Tobe Hooper movie because of the sheer insanity of it! I haven't actually seen Lifeforce or Invaders from Mars yet though. I'm hoping to pick up the Scream Factory releases here sometime soon. I'm currently debating whether to get Lifeforce + Invaders from Mars or just get this.

Lifeforce is really something else! If you thought TCM 2 was crazy, this movie makes it look subtle by comparison.

I was just thinking to myself, when is Scream Factory going to release this? I have the old DVD, may pick this up since it's still in stock. It's a weird one.

Just got through watching it myself.

Though things get super muddled in very last few minutes, its overall a wildly enjoyable sit that i'm happy to have finally bought.

Brad Dourif gets to showcase both his softer "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"/"Rob Zombie's Halloween 1 & 2" side and his more manic Chucky/Gemini Killer side at various points throughout the film and there's some really cool moments of cinematography that remind you that Tobe Hooper actually has chops behind the screen and isn't really some for hire hack some claim him to be.

If you dig Dourif and Hooper, this is such an easy blind buy. Don't be scared to dive in.

However, as others stated, I do agree that the compression artifacts and Code Red putting it onto a single layer blu-ray disc does take a toll on the transfer's picture quality. However, until someone in the UK rescues this film for a much deserved spotlight, this will do.

I will agree it gets super muddled in the last few minutes. I have no clue what even happened in the end, but it didn't take away from how much fun I had watching it. The structure is rather odd as well; I feel as if the first 20 minutes could have easily been condensed down to like a 6 or 7 minutes just to get things moving. Because of the stretched out beginning the film does feel a tad rushed in spots.

I completely agree with you about Brad Dourif! I was honestly just glued to the screen because he basically gives it 110%. You brought up another great point about the cinematography as well! The climax scene in the mansion is filmed to perfection and has some genuinely fantastic shots. I was skeptical about picking this up for awhile based on all the negative hype surrounding it even as a fan of Hopper and Dourif. I am so happy I did though because there's a lot of great stuff in it. Here's to hoping a different company puts more effort into a future release when Code Red's rights expire because, like you said, it deserves much more attention than it gets.
