Default marantz or onkyo

I need to stay under $300 for my receiver. The farther under 300 the better so I have some money to buy rears. I recently purchased the Polk 60's for my fronts and the CS2 for my center. I use a PS3 as my bdp. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Marantz vs. Onkyo receivers? I was looking at the Onkyo 605 or 606 and the Marantz 4002 or the Marantz 5001. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Since the ps3 is your blu-ray player and it doesn't have analog outs for the decoded hd-audio that means that you need a receiver which can accept audio over hdmi. That unfortunately removes the Marantz 5001 receiver from consideration leaving the Onkyo's or the Marantz 4002, although you could look at the Sony 720 or the yamaha 663.

Thanks for the response kp. The Marantz receivers are unable to accept audio over HDMI?

Just, checked the website and it appears as the 4002 can accept audio over hdmi, although I couldn't find any similar information about the 5001. I would suggest the Marantz over the Onkyo so long as you have a smaller room as the onkyo has more power.

I think you need the xx2 line from Marantz to get HDMI 1.1 with repeater (audio)

The 5002 is a really nice receiver, you can get one refurb'd for $349.
The 4002 refurb'd for $299

The Onkyo TX-SR605 you can get for $249
http://www.accessories4less.com/make...r-BLACK/1.html

That should leave you some dosh for some rears.

I have a Marantz SR 5001 in the bedroom..... It will accept PCM from the PS3 so you can in fact get the latest Codecs......

Many here like Onkyo also..... The choice is really up to you....

(If it were put to a vote, I'd say MARANTZ for sure )

Marantz.

I don't believe these two companies are in the same league.

Marantz would be considered a significant step up for a lot of people.

That is absolutely correct - at that level of receiver to suggest one is substantially better (or even mildly better in my opinion) than the other would be misleading.

Were you to step up to the Marantz AV8003 and MM8003 then it would be a different story, but then you'd be looking at separates.

I had a Marantz 7002 in my setup.I was going to purchase it.
I was personal disapointed.I found it to be a layed back sound .
I wanted a reciever to wow me and for me it didn't.
Personal i like bright recievers.so i brought it back.Remember it also depends on the type of speakers you use as well.
But remember that's just me.I know of a lot owners that love Marantz. It's forsure personal preferance

I have polk monitor 60's with a cs2 up front and i'm planning on getting the 50's for my rears. Will one receiver be better than the other for these speakers? I'm thinkin the onkyo 606 or the marantz 4002

Ive been hearing good things about Onkyo on this forum ,But ive never heard one first hand

This might take a little work but it will be worth it.Find a place that gives you a 7 days or so money back if your not happy and try both recievers.(most dealers do this at least the good ones do)
Thats truley the only way for sure to find out what reciever is best suited for you.
Iam sorry ,I wish it was easier than that. But if your really serious in finding the right reciever that is only way to do it ,In my opinion
