Default Blood Games (1990) coming from Vinegar Syndrome

Quote:
It all started as a simple game of softball... When a women's softball team win a game against a group of rough talking and dirty playing men, they find themselves unwittingly involved in a new competition with much higher stakes: life and death. After being horribly attacked and assaulted by their male competitors, the women are forced to use both their wits and strength to escape their tormentors and avenge their teammates, but quickly find themselves trapped in a deadly cat and mouse chase through a nearby forest, where violence lurks behind every tree...

A shockingly violent revenge thriller that, despite its early 90s release date, is as unflinching in its brutality as the roughest exploitation films of the 1970s, Isreali director Tanya Rosenberg's BLOOD GAMES is a tense and action packed exploitation gem. Starring prolific stunt woman Laura Albert, alongside Ken Carpenter (Tammy and the T-Rex), Ross Hagen (Wonder Women), Gregory Scott Cummins (Hack-O-Lantern), and cult character actor George 'Buck' Flower (Berserker), Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents the long overdue disc debut of BLOOD GAMES, in a brand new 2K restoration.

Directed by: Tanya Rosenberg
Starring: Laura Albert, Ken Carpenter, Ross Hagen, Gregory Scott, George 'Buck' Flower

"Underrated" exploitation flick. Very fun backwoods survival/terror delivering the goods. Never thought to see this one hitting blu-ray.

The mondo-digital "review" is more of a synopsis. Either way, excited for this one.

Only purchased sale items during the sale... I've regretted not nabbing this ever since. I thought I could hold out until black Friday.
Yeah, not going to happen lol. This looks awesome.

I wouldn't worry about it, it'll be back, just in non-slipcover form (or alternate slipcover form).

Anyone else receive 2 sleeve inserts for this? Is the extra a replacement or something?

I'll pick it up once VS reopens, plus LA Wars.

You received two slips for Blood Games because there is a misprint on the slip packed with the release. The loose slip is the replacement.

Would anyone with a multi region player be so kind to test Blood Games on region B please? There is a guy in the VS thread claiming it works on B. Would like more confirmation before I bite.

An all-female softball team, Babe and the Ballgirls, travels to a backwoods town, where they thoroughly defeat a rival team of beer-guzzling males, despite the fact that they are repeatedly objectified and even groped by the men during the game. Unsurprisingly, the men are sore losers, are unhappy about being upstaged by their female counterparts, and are eager to exact revenge by violently terrorizing and assaulting the women. After a series of harrowing events in the small town, our resilient heroines find themselves stranded in the wilderness, where they are pursued by the armed male villains across unforgiving terrain.

The fast-paced 1990 feature, Blood Games, which was helmed by female director Tanya Rosenberg and earned a cult following in VHS rental stores after a small-scale theatrical release, combines the slasher exploitation aesthetic of films like Slumber Party Massacre, the wilderness survival aspects of Deliverance and First Blood, and the rape revenge intensity of screen stories like I Spit on Your Grave. Ken Carpenter (Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Tammy and the T-Rex) is the most recognizable face here to B movie fans, but Laura Albert, a stunt performer who has worked on popular films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Town, commands the most attention as the team leader who ends up leading her fellow players through the woods during “the most dangerous game.”

Blood Games, with its scenes of women hunted by Carpenter's antagonist, who roams the forest with a crossbow, and his cohorts, its depictions of self-defense by way of baseball bats, and a nifty final death scene that reminds this reviewer of the demise of the Emperor in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, will never be mistaken for family friendly fare. At its core, however, it emerges quite successfully as a heartwarming reminder that true friends who stand up for one another and stick together during tough times can accomplish anything.

On an amusing note, the sheer level of hillbilly incompetence displayed by the male tormenters in this movie boggles the mind. The men cannot play softball, they cannot hunt, they cannot fight, and they cannot survive forest terrain. I am in awe of how these characters survived to middle age in a rural environment, but, if drinking beer, chewing tobacco, and leering at the opposite sex are essential to thriving in this fictional world, then I suppose that they have their bases covered. At any rate, I wanted to cheer out loud whenever one of them met the receiving end of a swift kick or a baseball bat to the head courtesy of the female heroes.

This Vinegar Syndrome hits multiple home runs in all departments without injury or defeat. The video and audio both hit high marks, as do the interviews with Albert and Carpenter. I encourage everyone to order this one from VS at their earliest convenience, but be sure to pay full price without short-changing like Carpenter's nefarious sore loser does in the film.

Just got my copy after an order snafu (thought I could get free shipping since I ordered just before the sale and my item hadn't shipped, but no dice). When I saw the second insert cover, I thought "this is some next level collector shit, now you can look at both covers without opening it".

Then I saw this post and found the error in about 10 seconds.

Kudos to VS for being cool about the shipping mix-up, and double for just replacing the error cover right off the bat (softball pun?). Triple for how well they pack and ship. This great experience is gonna get me to try out many more titles I might not have before.

Well, this website has it listed as Region Free, and apparently someone confirmed that it does work on Region B players, so I was just making sure.

The original releases of the first batch of MGM Vinegar Syndrome titles including Blood Games were indeed region free despite being listed as region A locked on both the VS website and the back of the case. Later MGM titles starting from Perfect Strangers onwards were locked to region A.

The re-release of Blood Games whilst should be the same disc might be locked this time around so it’d probably be worth waiting and asking someone who buys it.

I didn't know they pressed some MGM titles erroneously as region free. They're suppose to be A

Thanks for that. There is still a lot of limited editions of Blood Games on the VS website, so I'm guessing those should all be Region Free? I wasn't aware that the other MGM titles were Region Free as well, but upon checking them on this site (Patty Hearst, Pale Blood, Old Dracula, The Severed Arm, The Immortalizer), they are indeed all listed as Region Free. These titles are all still available in their limited edition slipcovers, so is it safe to say that those should all be Region Free? Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated!
