The sequel to Trainspotting, based on Irvine Welsh's Porno, is being planned for 2016, says Danny Boyle...

If Shallow Grave was the film that put director Danny Boyle on the map in the first place, it was his second movie, Trainspotting, that really elevated him. At some point, we need to have a chat about his underrated third feature - A Life Less Ordinary - but in the meantime, Boyle has admitted that plans for a Trainspotting sequel are finally coming together.

On promotional duties for his new film, Trance, Danny Boyle admitted that John Hodge is working on a screenplay for the film now, which will adapt, loosely, Irvine Welsh's book Porno. Boyle is planning to make the film in 2016, and also is looking to get the cast of the first film back together. Crucially, that'd include Ewan McGregor, with whom Boyle hasn't worked since he passed him over for the lead role in The Beach, in favour of Leonardo DiCaprio.

Boyle said of the project that "The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger. So you want to make sure you don't disappoint people"

Should Porno be released in 2016, which is quite likely, then it'd be in time for the - ready to feel old? - 20th anniversary of Trainspotting. Yikes.

I would love to see this happen, but 2016? Eeeesshh. Haven't read the sequel book - anyone know if it's good? Big fan of Trainspotting.

Its ok but not nearly as good as the first. They are both very difficult reads, as they are written kind of phoenetically, so you can hear the characters'accents. It makes for slow, difficult reading.

Does this movie really needs a sequel?? I am not sure. Felt the movie had a definite closure. What would probably bring those characters together?? or is it going to be a movie where the major leads never meet??

Yeah, I felt like an idiot muttering the conversations out loud to figure out what they were saying when I was reading it.

‘Trainspotting 2’: Robert Carlyle Says ‘It’s One of the Best Scripts I’ve F—ing Read’

Robert Carlyle has read the script for “Trainspotting 2” and he seems to be a fan.

“You’re going to think, ‘Of course he’s going to say this,’ but honestly, it’s one of the best scripts I’ve f—ing read. I mean, ever,” Carlyle, who played Begbie in the original “Trainspotting,” said to NME in a recent interview.

“Trainspotting” director Danny Boyle will helm the sequel, and writer John Hodge returned to pen the script, which is said to be loosely based on Irvine Welsh’s “Trainspotting” follow-up novel “Porno.” In fact, the entire main cast of the original is expected to return, including Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ewan Bremner.

“Obviously these four characters are 20 years older now and I’ve never seen a sequel that takes place 20 years after the original, so I think that gives it a certain unique quality,” Carlyle noted. “And the way John Hodge has put this thing down, obviously with the help of Danny Boyle, is to make it about how the characters’ lives have moved on… or have they? Without giving anything away, maybe some of them haven’t really moved on. That’s what the audience is going to have to go through with them. I tell you, this film is going to be quite emotional for people. Because the film sort of tells you to think about yourself. You are going to be thinking: ‘F—. What have I done with my life?'”

Carlyle spoke highly of both the power of Hodge’s script and his faith in Boyle’s directorial talent.

“And though I’m obviously feeling a little bit tense about it because of the success of the first film, I’ll tell you this: if anyone can pull it off it’s Danny Boyle,” he said “He’s the best director I’ve ever worked with, he’s immense.”

“Trainspotting 2” is expected to begin shooting next summer.

Original cast returning!

Currently titled Trainspotting 2, the new film is written by John Hodges (who also scripted the first film), and based on Walsh’s 2002 book Porno, a sequel set 10 years after the events of Trainspotting.

In it, Simon “Sick Boy” Williamson (the character played by Miller in the original film) returns to Leith to open a pub, and becomes involved in making underground porn films. Renton, meanwhile, has remained sober, and is living in Amsterdam.

Boyle’s most recent film, Steve Jobs (a biopic of the late Apple co-founder), premiered on Saturday at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, and received a slate of overwhelmingly positive reviews.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!

I don't know about this, I love Danny Boyle, it's nice to see him team back up with Ewan McGregor and all these actors have career best performances from the first film, but I think everyone is kinda past this now. It doesn't help that despite how great the original, it's overall ugly nastiness has always been a bit much for me.

Still hope for the best, it'll be interesting to revisit these guys.
