There has to be some catch what can this one not do that all blu ray players can? More importantly what can't this do that my 40gig PS3 can? The Memorex MVBD-2510 Blu-ray Disc Player Quote:

It's not BD-Live (Profile 2.0) capable and doesn't internally decode DTS HD Master Audio are the main differences from a PS3 I believe. I'm sure the loading time isn't as fast as the PS3 and maybe it will require firmware updates more often. It's the same internally as the other Funai players (Magnavox, Insignia, etc.).
Most people (including me) doesn't give a damn about BD-Live and unless you have a decent audio setup you likely won't notice a huge difference between the DTS core vs Master Audio. For a person on a budget this sounds like a great player and deal. This thread talks about those players (all the same internally): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=48943 |

My only concern with low-priced BD players is that they will not get necessary fermware updates to play newer discs as they come out. In addition, one has to wonder if they will have on-board decoding of Dolby TrueHD or DTS master Audio. And will they upconvert old-ray DVDs? For me, HDMI connectivity is a must. I hope the lower-priced BD players will not disappoint newbies who come to experience Blu-ray.

I have the Best Buy Insignia Blu-ray player. It seems to be from the same OEM source.
The catch? A bit slower than the PS/3 to load. The remote is pretty good, but I don't like the STOP button being at the same position as the PAUSE button on the PS/3 remote. The unit (Insignia) looks big and plain vanilla. But it does seem like a solid player. If you search the forums you will find lots of info on the Funai based players |
