Default Blu-Ray Player for now (1080iTV) and later (1080pTV)

My girlfriend's family has had this 70 inch Mitsubishi rear projection 1080series TV for almost 10 years now, and all we've ever watched on it was regular TV and SD DVDs. When I got my Panasonic HVX200a, I shot some footage, and plugged it in via component, and it was amazing to see HD for the first time!

I don't know much about TVs and how they work with players, but I as a videographer I'm very familiar with the differences between progressive and interlaced, frame rates, pulldowns, resolutions, etc. I work with all of this on camera and computer, but once it gets to TV, I'm clueless.

When I heard that some Blu-Ray players can play 24p (with no pulldown), I was amazed! I got excited, but then I realized that 24p must only be a digital (HDMI) option, and impossible for our 1080i TV with only analog component inputs. Am I right?

I want to buy a good Blu Ray player that I can use now via component with our 1080i TV. But I want to find one that is 24p capable, so I can use it later on when I can afford a 1080p TV.

Would 24p capable HDMI Blu Ray players also work with a 1080i component TV? Does anyone reccomend any specific players?

I am not aware of any player that is not capable of outputting 1080/24p via hdmi.

As such your options are many and varied. Did you have a budget in mind for a player? What type of sound system will this player be hooked up to? Do you like to play video games?

Well, I had my eye on the Panasonic DMP-BD30. I'm looking in the $250 and below range. And I guess being an HVX user makes me lean toward Panasonic over Sony.

Would the DMP-BD30 work fine with my 1080i component TV?

And just to make sure, there is no way to play anything other than 60i on a 1080i TV through component right? No chance for progressive frames or 24p without pulldown right?

DMP-BD30 should be fine for 1080i via component.

To my knowledge, there is no such thing of "24p without pulldown". Any TV displaying 24 frames/sec is basically unwatchable because of the flickering (with such low refleshing rate). It can use 2:3 pulldown to achieve 60Hz playback, or 5:5 pulldown to achieve 120Hz playback (or even something else). Am I right?

The S350 is a real nice player.

Load times are pretty fast. The menu layout (XMB) is easy to use and almost identical to the PS3.

The look of this machine is "sleek". I really like the blue lighting it gives off, which is kinda comforting and not annoying like some of the lights other components/devices can give off.

Does just about everything you need...great PQ and AQ.

Overall I like my PS3 better (just because of the extra features), but for a standalone this thing is great!

The Sony 350 is fine for your needs, but if you go with Panasonic get the 35, not the 30.
