Default L,R speakers on the sides

I'm building a game room in my basement, I have it wired for 7.1 sound and at the moment I have the front L,R speakers on the side walls, since I'm planning on building shelves on the sides of the tv. I'm going to be doing mostly gaming and some movie watching, now before I Sheetrock, will having the speakers on the sides instead of the fonts ruin the surround sound experience?

The main front speakers: Left and right are usually place on the side of the TV, and the center channel is either situated on the top or below the TV. So your front speaker placement is normal, and it will not hinder the sound of the rest of the speakers when you get them.

Agreed.

In most cases a home theater build is based on a series of compromises. Do the best you can to fit into your room and I'm sure you'll be happy.

The correct answer is this (clicky) which provides actual measurements for speaker placement.

OK so My setup is going to be, C channel under the Mounted Tv, L channel on the left wall of the room and the R channel on the right wall.

Thanks for your feedback

Maybe its just me... But I'm interpreting that as your speakers are on the left and right walls facing each other.

Now on the chance that happy hour started to early for me and you mean they will be on the far left and right facing you as if but on the wall where your tv is pls forgive me..

If that is indeed the case you may want to angle your speakers somewhat like this \ 0 / (\=left speaker 0= center speaker /= right speaker) If your space is wide enough.

There is a technical term for that but at the moment it escapes me.

"toed in"

not all speakers need it and some manufacturers recommend not to. the user should experiment with it to see which gives them the best results.

There it is!! That's it!!

I meant to edit my post by saying that the speakers do not need to be toed in as extreme my example. Nor should they be flush against the wall either.

Apologies if what I suggested came across as a set in stone "rule".

I agree, each situation is unique. Only through trial and experimentation will the OP find what works best for him.

If I understand your intentions correctly, placing your Main/Fronts on the side walls (facing each other) would hurt the entire sound field. I know that every room is different, and sometimes the standard placement of a 5.1/7.1 set up can be challenging, but is there any chance that you could maybe place the shelves on the side walls, then place the Main/Fronts on each side of the TV ? This will provide you with the optimum sound field. This is your set up, and if that pleases you, that's all that matters. If I did misunderstand your Main/Fronts speaker placement, then please forgive me. You did ask that will this set up hurt the surround sound experience and IMHO it will effect the entire sound field. However you choose to go about your set up, I hope it works for you, and best of luck.
