800x480 on a 10 inch screen may have been impressive 2-3 years ago, but it simply DOSE NOT cut it anymore.
I take my PDP EVERYWHERE & use it on a daily basis because it's WAY quicker at playing DVDs than my laptop. BUT, content shot in HD looks like CRAP, I know because I own the "best" portable DVD player out there right now. (PHILIPS' PET1030) It's high time SOME company (SONY, SAMSUNG, PHILIPS) went the extra mile & make a portable BD/DVD player with an LCD (or OLED) screen that has a resolution of AT LEAST 1280x800. SOMEBODY has to make the first PBDP (portable Blu-ray disc player) SOON!!!
I think the whole thing should be chrome blue in color with a fabulous 10-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1200. |

It won't be Blu ray as it max's out at 1920 x 1080. Really the screen does not need to be anywhere that resolution. The TV / laptop argument doesn't stack up as you don't sit 50cm 20" from 50" TV. Your eyes would not pick the difference on a screen that's 10" from 720 or 1080. Nothing wrong with having a Blu ray player in it though.

Either SONY or SAMSUNG should step up & be the first to make a portable BD player. I HATE having to lug around a laptop to watch movies. But it IS possible to get more pixels into a smaller screen IF they want to.

judging by the size of the first gen players though (HD DVD and bluray) they are ginormous beasts that resemble 70's VCR's, so i dont see this happening for a while. I guess Sharp's new BD player looks pretty sleak though.

I hope there's truth to the CES rumor that Sony may make the PSP available to dl mini-versions of movies off of the discs

I DON'T want a laptop for viewing DVDs because:
1. 15/17 inch screens are too big & ackward to look at while sitting at a desk, I want a 10 inch screen that has a ultra-clear high resolution image. 2. Battey life on nearly all modern laptops is pathetic. |

Can you even notice the difference between 1080p and 480p on a 10" screen?

A portable BD player is NOT facetious in any way.
There are a few U(ltra)M(obile)PCs out there now that have 7 inch screens with resolutions of 1200x800 or better. There's NO reason for 10 inch screens to still have 800x480 resolutions. |

technically it is impossible to manufacture a 1920x1080 screen that small. Panasonic just released their 46" 1080P screen and it's not that great (the smaller the pixel, the less light output is created, resulting in a dimmer image). Either way, you cannot really tell the difference on a screen that small (10").

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this thread was discussed a while back and I explained it is not very feasable at the moment.
Blu-ray right now, as great as it is, is still a "boat anchor" technology compared to DVD. They need time to shrink the core components into fewer chips. Battery life will be a major issue. Takes a few years to really get this down to portable sizes. Someone mentioned how smaller high resolution screens impede light. I suppose that is true, but enter OLED. They give off their own light. It is possible if the industry wants to make them. But they are still struggling to recoup R&D and make money off the current crop of players. I agree a portable blu-ray would rock, and I'd buy it just to take to friends houses and show them blu-ray on their HDTV. This would be a great kick in the pants to HD-DVD. ![]() Last edited by tron3; 10-03-2007 at 04:21 PM. |
