Default Amazon $17.49 Day & Night Watch - Worth buying?

I saw that both Day Watch and Night Watch have a significant price reduction (as I have been watching for them to drop for many months now) and wondering if they are worth it at this price.

Comments welcome.

I like them both. However, the movies are "strange". Hard to recommend them to someone without knowing their tastes.

I found these films to be very entertaining with good action sequences and a fair dose of comedy thrown in to it's very dark setting. It can be a bit hectic with a whole slew of characters and storylines that can get a bit confusing, only more so because I don't speak Russian.

Description:
It's a Russian Sci-Fi action film with immortals, vampires, and shapeshifters directed by the Director of Wanted. If that sounds interesting to you then feel free to pick it up. It's certainly a little edgier and darker than typical hollywood fare, so I wouldn't necessarily go around recommending it to everyone. If you have any concerns you can rent them and decide for yourself.

Supposedly they theatrically(or at least the first one) had special animated subtitles, which I don't believe are available on the blu-ray.

No this would be a blind buy for me. Most comments on Amazon refer to the DVDs which dont help me. One complaint was dissing the blu release for lack of animated captions *shrug*.

Asking if a movie is worth 17.49 is hard to answer. Because only that person can justify what they spend and it is their money. And still don't know if the OP has seen them.

With that said, they are a lot cheaper than MSRP at 34.99 which is what most 20th Century Fox releases are.

Have you seen Wanted? You get a taste of what the director of these movies is like.

Yes, I own wanted. Liked it, watched the making extras and was impressed with the directors unique approach to movie making... such as the moving L train set, Good stuff.

I'm hesitant because the subtitles are no longer animated.

I saw Night Watch few years ago I can say that it was quite a bad movie. I and my gf don't like it.

Buy a used one first.

I was not that impressed...could never get into the story. Some like it...as I like movies they don't.

So either buy used or rent.

I liked them, but that's just me. Not as good as the books, unfortunately; but that's almost always the case.

The (slightly) animated subtitles on the dvd were cool, but nothing that should make or break purchasing the blu.

They do get a bit hectic visually, but if you liked Wanted it shouldn't bother you.

I saw the second one (DAY WATCH) in the theater. I think the animated subtitles kind of make the movie... They added good humor. I saw the first one dubbed, some of the stuff was lost in translation, but overall it was entertaining. The films are unique and not for everyone's tastes. Wanted is a good comparison. Those prices seem pretty good. I got them as part of a b2g1 on amazon at about $15 apiece. I have not watched the blus yet. I'm disappointed about the lack of animated subtitles.

I thought Night Watch was interesting as a foreign take on the Matrix. Day Watch put me to sleep though and I can not recommend it.

I thought they were good movies, seeing that they are fox titles, I think $17.49 is a good price

Have you read the book(s)

neither is really based on the books and they are both about the night watch and Anton more precisely. If you read night watch, you know it had 3 stories, the movie night watch is very loosely based on the first story and day watch is based on the third.

If you know nothing about any of this, it is fiction (not sci-fi), and here is some detail of the world we are talking about -but no spoilers on the movies themselves. There is a secret dimension(s) known as the twilight and some people can enter it (mostly a special ability some people are born with). These people are known as others. Once someone becomes an other (shows his ability) he usually needs to choose to be on the side of good (selflessness) or evil (selfishness) -which is ironic because the line between selflessness and selfishness especially in the book is blurry. A long time ago there was a big war between the light/good/selfless and the dark/evil/selfish which almost destroyed the world. An agreement was signed and the light created a police force known as the night watch and the dark created a police force known as the day watch (but there are light and dark others that are not members of the watches). Others are mostly born (inate) and mostly have a choice, but there are some others like vampires who are turned and are always evil (after all they need to feed on humans).

Don't be fooled. Night/Day Watch is WAY better than Wanted. Wanted is this guy's worst film.
