Default User Movie Reviews

Has anyone else realized how the user reviews for movies (not video/audio) are way too generous? Almost every movie is above 3.5.

Some people may love (or like a lot) the films that others think suck.

Think that's the biggest part of it, I usually don't write reviews about movies I don't like either

Yeah I have to agree with jwbbud, I usually dont write a review for a movie unless its one that I really like!

I've seen a few user reviews for movies they obviously didn't like and most people hit the little negative red sign next to the review.

Yeah, because most people looking at the reviews are fans of the movie.

My policy about reviews is that, If you don't like the movie, then don't talk about it.

It actually would be kind of refreshing to read member reviews of movies that they didn't like for whatever reason.

That is why people need to start reviewing movies they don't like. It is always nice to see some constructive criticism. Most of the negative reviews are like "This movie sucks," with no explanation whatsoever.

I've noticed some people put all 5's for everything regardless if they {The Movie} deserved it or not. I'm sure that boosts some scores up.

Most will not even buy or rent a movie, if it's not one they think they will like to begin with. Irrespective, I trust user reviews more than reviewer reviews. If the movie was fun (which is what it's all about anyway) there will be a lot of positive user reviews. A bad movie will have very few positive reviews. In some instances, the official reviewer makes it clear that he/she does not even know what the movie is about. You just can't go on one opinion.

Personally, I have a system for rating movies with a 1-5 ranking system. If I watched it and had a pleasant time, it automatically gets a 3. If I was constantly waiting for it to be over, it gets a 2. If I had to turn it off, it gets a 1 (most places don't let you give 0's). If it was really good, I give a 4, and if it was one of the best I have ever seen for the genre, I give a 5 (quality threshholds are different for horror movies than for dramas, of course).

I should preface this by saying I only read reviews for PQ and AQ, I don't trust people's opinions when it comes to movie quality and tend to want to watch a movie without the review clouding my judgement at all. That said I will read them after I see the movie.

As for user reviews I don't even read them as they're quite suspect to me. People's opinions on what discs look good and what discs don't are too varied and they're set-up is always in doubt so I'll stick to buying movies I like and judging myself. I will read staff reviews of movies I intend to blind buy but never for movie quality reviews, only PQ and AQ.

All the staff reviewers DO have calibrated sets I assume? I hope so. Anyway they've been pretty close. Exception being Advent Children, it had moments of PQ wowness, but so many parts looked jaggy and not good at all. Still glad I got it, love the mythos of that particular world.

Highdefdigest does a pretty good job as well, for the most part. Their Advent Children review was closer to how I felt about the PQ than bluray.com.

Um.. what? Isn't it a critic's job to review movies whether they liked them or not?

Actually, I don't think any reviewers here publicize their system components, let alone whether their display has been professionally calibrated.

Another point is that most people won't by the Blu-ray unless they like the movie. So if they don't like it, they most likely won't own it...so they can't review it. The movie rating and the Blu-ray rating should be separated. Thoughts?

its pretty simple really: when some read a review of a movie they LOOOOVE, they take it personal. pure and simple. let's face it: we're all movie fanatics or we wouldn't be here. hence, retaliation ensues with negative rating, and alas, all negative ratings appear at the bottom of the ranking.

What will really explain this issue: the eventual ratings for Transformers 2 when it comes out...i hope that sense will be knocked into the reviewers here and negative reviews will flow in!
