Default Best BD PQ from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s?

So what's the best Blu-ray PQ from the 1940s? I don't know. (Crossing my fingers it will be Citizen Kane).

The 50s? South Pacific?

The 60s? 2001: A Space Odyssey?

The 70s? The Warriors?

The 80s? Blade Runner?

Chime in, please. I've been hitting up the AVS forum tier system and peeping these grades a bit, and working them out in my own head (and eyes).

I'm not even saying if you like the film. One from each decade. Take your pick. What say you?

I would not use that thread to judge older films. It has unfortunately become an "eye candy" ranking rather than a "high quality transfer" ranking, where the artistic intent of any film is ignored. Taxi Driver is an excellent transfer, but it doesn't look like a Pixar film, never should, and never will, and thus gets ranked low in that thread. Unless that's what you're looking for, of course.

very quick picks:
1940s: haven't seen one I've been that impressed with
1950s: White Christmas
1960s: How The West Was Won
1970s: Alien
1980s: Blade Runner

Yeah, I mean, AVS is just a tool, like any other tool - opinions like any others. It's interesting though.

But yes, I'm thinking along the lines of "eye candy" here - which, naturally, should go hand in hand with the transfer, if we're all on the same page that the image has not been messed with too much, with the exception of removing the scratches, dirt, debris, etc...

30s: Gone with the Wind
40s: Casablanca
50s: Forbidden Planet
60s: Star Trek: The Original Series
70s: Papillon
80s: Blade Runner, but I also think The Thing looks well done even though the HD DVD looks slightly better than the BD due to DNR.

The extended dance number at the end of American in Paris is downright eye popping. Zulu is fantastic looking as well. The Red Shoes is beautifully photographed, but I think Pandora and the Flying Dutchman looks a bit better as far as the transfer goes. Dr No and Goldfinger are stunning.

Zulu is in the public domain in the US, but I don't think it is in Britain. The Blu-Ray there is from Paramount, who originally released it there in the 60s.

I do believe Black & White and Colour films should have separate categories.

1960's: 2001: A Space Odyssey
1970's: Apocalypse Now
1980's: Blade Runner DC

65mm > 35mm
