Default If you had one chance to convert someone

.... to blu ray based on video/audio alone ... What disc would you select and why ?

Too many mega threads to comb through.

TRON: Legacy. No question about it.

Depends on who I'm trying to convert. If I'm trying to convert some of my friends who really only care about effects, I'd probably show them Avatar or something similar. If I'm trying to convert a film fanatic, I'd probably show them Taxi Driver or Lawrence of Arabia.

Exactly, it is much easier to convert someone if you are showing then what they love in HD

I don't know. Any action/adventure movie with a good 7.1 audio track.

However, ... I can't be bothered to try to show someone the light so to speak. Many people are comfortable with a very inferior playback medium. Many people can live with youtube (without even noticing the quality settings on youtube.)

I would put Titanic or Citizen Kane in there too.

I'm not necessarily looking for loud ... I'm looking for tasteful and accurate in both audio and video ...

It can be loud and exciting ... But not necessary.

As an animation fan, I would probably not only try to introduce the person to Blu-ray but also the fact that animated films aren't "just for kids." With that in mind, I'd probably go for a Pixar film like Up, Ratatouille, or WALL-E.

A DVD comparison with the blu-ray for Jaws could go a long way.

Like Goofnut said, Tron: Legacy was made for this format.

Also Skyfall and Avatar.

I think it would show them that pretty much all TV stations are now available in HD.

Then I'd take them to both Future Shop and Best Buy, to show them that the Blu-ray sections are twice as large as the DVD sections in both stores.

Then I'd show them how cheap you can get a Blu-ray player for and tell them to get with the times.

If they still need convincing then I'd give up all hope.

I would show this person the 70th Anniversary Blu-ray of Casablanca.

This restored transfer of Casablanca is a good example of how old movies no longer look like "old movies" when they are viewed in high definition, and it is a great example of how the world of Blu-ray elevates familiar well-loved movies to a new level so that we feel as through we are watching these movies for the first time all over again. I would then steer this person to the Blu-ray transfers of The Adventures of Robin Hood, King Kong (1933), North By Northwest, Bela Lugosi's Dracula, the Sean Connery James Bond films, Seven Samurai, and many others.

The best thing about Blu-ray is experiencing old movies that have been lovingly restored.

Some good posts. Agreed with a few people. Tron and Avatar are ear and eye candy. LoA and Casablanca are both restored classics that have never looked better.

I've been trying to find that version for a good price since I started collecting.

I do not have the giant box set, and I merely own the single-disc edition that I found for $9.99 at Best Buy a few months ago. The inexpensive single-disc edition serves the greater good just as much as the box set, because the transfer is the same. The box set has some cool extras, though.

The cheapest right now is this double pack with The African Queen for $14.99. It's been confirmed by a few people to have the 70th anniversary version:

Is the box set OOP? Or is that for the older version or something? I usually don't buy box sets because they take up too much room.

Thank you Mifune. I always thought I heard people saying there was an audio issue on that disc. I'm not much for double packs but it will give me another great film so why not?

Try to find if they like film grain or not first!

I think that It's a mad mad mad mad world picture is stunning. Several movies shot in 70mm are great on BD.

Avatar for the modern, clean look.

Black swan for the artsy, grainy look.

Unstoppable have a great mix of high action picture and dynamic sound.

It's not like we are demo-material starved! But find movies they like, it will have the most effect! And if it doesn't work, don't lose sleep over the issue. You can lead a horse to the water but...

Spot on.

I normally disrecommend double-movie packages, but Casablanca and The African Queen fit perfectly together, and the Blu-ray transfers of both films are superb.

The box set is still in print, and all of the information you need is right here.

The standard Blu-ray disc has plenty of wonderful extras related to the movie itself, and the box set has a sprawling documentary about the studio.

I went with the single-disc of the 70th Anniversary transfer to save room, and because the movie itself is the main attraction, but the box set has a nice price as well.

Thank you!

Back to the topic, just about any marvel movie will do the job.
