Default My Transmission needs replacement!

My transmission went on me last night coming home from work. I had it towed back to my place and is being picked up today by my buddy.

How much does a new transmission cost or should I get it rebuilt? Can I even have that done? What about cost? Any ideas?

John

Man, sorry to hear, that really stinks. I think a rebuilt transmission will cost you around $900 or so, been awhile since I checked that out, though...

Depends on what the issue is. The bigger the problem, the bigger the cost.

Also, what make/model? A rebuilt tranny can cost anywhere from $1000-$3000.

+1.. sometimes its no even worth replacing the transmission since the car is probably low value already. so instead use the money for a new car. That's what I would think of if it's expensive to fix.

I was afraid of that! The car's been great, has never given me any problems at all....until now. Gonna wait and see what the verdict is and then decide from there.

I have replaced two transmissions on my vechiles over the years and I would not do it again. Basicly because you do not know how many miles are on the one you are buying. One think to consider too is what could break next and how much more money are you willing to spend on the vechile.
Good luck.

That was my first thought. How good is the condition of the rest of the car?

With some vehicles you can snag a transmission pretty cheap, like the AW4 in my XJ, but I don't know about the Intrepid. Maybe you could find a low milage one at a junkyard.

Somewhere I have a link that lets you search local junkyards....

http://www.car-part.com/ I think this was it.

A couple of ways you can go about this...rebuild the one thats on the car or get an already rebuild one or get a used one from the junkyard.
What I would suggest before you have to go the distance and rebuild it or change it is have the one on the car completely checked out first..check the oil and the filter in the transmission also have your friend check out the transmission modulator..its could be something simple to fix.Good luck.
