Broadcom SOC

I just picked up a Insignia BD player for $89 and I updated the firmware on it, and noticed it contained the same SOC that some of the older Sony, and others had used. I also found that the same chip is used in the new LG that incorporates Netflix streaming.

The question came to me, if the chip is the same, other than a possible excryption device, what would keep one from flashing the updated firmware on a non LG branded BD player to get the features? The only thing I see is that the Insiginia does not have any sort of memory device to upgrade the memory....but it got me thinking. Maybe you can get updated profiles, when your Brand does not have a firmware out yet?
