Default Playstation 3 as Blu-ray player

I have been seriously considering buying a playstation 3. I have a blu-ray disk drive, so I can enjoy crisp picture display on my 26" lcd monitor. Can anyone attest to the blu-ray capability of the playstation 3. God of war 3 is coming out later this year, and I must get my hands on it.

I have a PS3 and I own 145 blu-ray movies. Only had playback issues on one of them at first(weird) that now seem to be resolved. Not to mention the PS3 can upgrade its firmware with wireless Internet, always a plus.

the PS3 is more than a blu-ray player or a video game console. it's the ultimate entertainment solution. if you have the money for it, there's no reason not to have a PS3. you will find yuorself with more things to do with the PS3 than there is time.

to answer your question however, i have not heard a single complain regarding the PS3 as a blu-ray player since the firmware update that provided the last of the audio codecs.

I ONLY have a PS3 for my movies... it's been perfect for me. I upgraded my internal HDD and now I have all my pictures and music on it too.

Yeah, it's arguably the best BD player on the market, since it plays everything, can be updated, and is faster than everything else due to its Cell BE. Plus, it also plays games and does other home entertainment stuff.

I've had a few issues regarding certain discs from Blockbuster, but I think those were due to the discs themselves being busted up.

Buy the PS3 as a slightly more expensive Blu-ray player... be unbelievably astounded by the incredible versatility of the equipment that you just added to your HT!

It would seriously take a while to list everything the PS3 can do that other Blu-ray players can't. . .

i too, have loved my ps3, and consider it one of my most precious investments. i am a bit biased, since i do a lot of gaming as well.

to balance things out tho, as others might mention later on, the Ps3 siaxis controller, seems to be a challenge for some users. and the current XMB can be a bit intimidating for other users. it really depends on the users. for the controller, id suggest to get their ps3 remote control as well to resolve the first challenge. you can also set the ps3 to auto play each time a dvd/blu-ray/game is placed into the console.

if you are into gaming, and would consider a multimedia center as well, this is a great solution. if you plan on purchasing this only as a blu-ray player, there are a number of options out there as well, aside from this one.

Ive had a PS3 and standalone (SONBDPS1) Honestly I like the PS3 better. The PQ is similar, although the BDPS1 looked better. The thing I like the most is the load times on the PS3 are quick. Im not sure how fast current players load...... Lets just say the BDPS1 is slow as shit. Power on to movie is atleast 90 seconds to 2 minutes. PS3 is about 30 seconds from powering on. There are two things I dont like about the PS3, its inability to bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA via HDMI is one. LPCM works but Id rather have my reciever decode the signal. Also the PS3 is kinda loud. It doesnt really matter when I am cranking my system. However, at lower volumes I hear it.

In all the PS3 is a safe bet especially if you are a gamer...

Yes, the Playstation 3 is a great blu player! I use my mine and it is wonderful!

Question:
It was my understanding that a Playstation 3 could not play loseless audio, are you saying that the new update allows it to?

I would highly recomment a ps3 for blu-ray. I just recently bought the 160gb so I could put my older noisy motorstorm 80gig in the bedroom for movies and other media. I will not be playing games in the bedroom, but for $400 it has wifi for the updates which sony does a good job with. plus I can save movies music and pictures on it. Not to mention streaming from the my computer and remote play with my ps3. Also you want to rent movies you can also do that via the psn. I just couldn't justify spending almost as much for a stand alone player that would just play movies. (I guess a person could purchase a very low end player for pretty cheap.)

The new ps3's are extremely queit and well worth the money.

I wonder why the ps3 makes so much noise when playing blu ray? If other chipsets can do it without noise then surely the Cell/ps3 set up can too?

Anyway, its not that big of a deal, and some PS3's are quieter than others. In some cases you would probably hear your own air conditioning louder than the ps3. Unfortunately I have 60gb models (2 of them) and they are the loudest of the bunch. But still bearable. Will get another one soon for the HT room though, when its finished.

Playstation is a great buy, of course playing games and blu,s are what you hear the most about it, but for me the #1 thing mine is used for is
storing ripped movies and CD,s on, I find it easier to start the PS3 up
then find a disk.
