I just found out a couple hours ago after returning from my grandma's house that today she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. While the outlook on her survival doesn't seem that great, I will know tomorrow after she goes and sees a specialist tomorrow. She is only 61 years old and has a lot of living left to do. For anyone that is a Christian, she is the definition of following Christ. She is the one who had/has turned my life around and brought me to Christ. It is because of her faith that she is doing so remarkably well and that she almost acts like Cancer can't keep her down. I was truly astonished at the level of her optimism and how well she is dealing with it.
The hard part is obviously accepting what our whole family knows now. I am having an extremely difficult time dealing with this as she is basically my second mother. She has had as much influence bringing me up as both of my parents did. I truly don't know how to explain in words just how important she is to me. And it's not just me, it's the entire family. She is truly THE BEST person that I have ever known in my entire life and she has been the person that has kept me sane throughout the years as my family has really been through some hard times. I didn't want to go into great detail, but I already have. I apologize if it's really long. I just had to get it all out. For anyone that reads this, PLEASE pray and ask God for a miracle. Our family could certainly use one right now. Also, if anyone has had any previous relation to Cancer, especially Ovarian Cancer, please share as much details as you can. I'm trying to look up information on it, and from what I am reading, it isn't all that positive. Thanks guys. God bless. |

I'm sorry your grandmother and your family are going through this. Cancer is such a difficult illness for all concerned to deal with. My mother has had breat cancer twice, and skin cancer three times. She had a major scare a few months ago when her doctor thought he saw a shadow on her lung. My aunt had breast cancer and eventually succumb to brain cancer. It's a specter that haunts me with a family history like that.
I think one important thing is to make sure that her oncologist is up to date and well informed. The internet is a very valuable research tool, so ask your oncologist about the things you learn in your research. If they haven't heard of some of the things you ask about... they may not be the best oncologist. Attitude is also very important. Everyone concerned needs to do their best to stay positive and upbeat. If humor is important in your family... it's even more important now. One funny story... I was walking in the mall one day during the time my mother had her first battle with breast cancer. A surveyor asked me to trial some hair care products for a week and then answer a phone survey. A short time later... my mother started to lose her hair from the chemo. We went to the mall to get her a nicer wig, and I saw the same surveyor. My mother said she should go up to her and pull her wig off and say "look at what your hair products did to me!" My mother NEVER wallowed in the illness like her sister did...... and I think that may have been one key element in helping her win the battle. I'm not the praying kind.... but I sincerely hope for the best for your family. |

Very sorry to hear about your grandmother. You are in my prayers.
My grandfather just passed from throat cancer. The doctors just found it, a week before he passed. They said he has probably had it for at least 5 years. He was only 65. |

OP, my wife and I will certainly have you, your grandmother, and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
As robinandtami mentioned, attitude is the most important thing right now. Regardless of the outcome, it's best that you and your family stay positive with your grandmother, and show as little frustration and anger as possible. Between December and February this year, my 32-year-old brother (over-prescription of Rx drugs) and 44-year-old step-brother (cancer of the stomach, liver, bones and lungs) both passed away. Additionally, my wife and I had 2 miscarriages. Believe me when I say we empathize. Stay strong for those closest to you. |

i will definitely be thinking about you and your family and praying that all works out, it is a really good thing that she is in such good spirits about it, because that should help the rest of you, its very easy to let something like this get you down, but the fact that she is taking the news with a good attitude shows that she is at peace about it and thats the most important thing right now
