Default do you need to use a router for internet on PS3?

I have a modem that has a USB input and an ethernet -- I think that's the name -- input. Could I plug my PC into the USB input and the PS3 into the ethernet input? What about vice versa? If you can do either, which is the better configuration? Would I be able to use the internet on the PS3 and PC at the same time this way?

I don't think modems are designed to work with both at once, you might need to power cycle the modem between using the two connections. Better off getting a router, if you just need basic wired it'll be fairly cheap.

USB would also be painfully slow if it is anything like my modem. Mine also only switched to USB if something was wrong with the ethernet cable, not both at the same time. Get the router and you'll be happier.

It sounds like right now you have your PC connected directly to the modem via ethernet (connectors looks similar to phone jacks and the wire is tubular). You'd be best off just buying a router like Shin-Ra said. You can get them for $20-30 new.

The only problem is that depending on how your DSL modem/connection is setup it can be a real PITA to configure your router to get it working if your technical knowledge level is such that you aren't even sure what an ethernet cable is. =)

I took it one step further and got mental. I have a wireless router in my office for my 2 PCs in there and the notebook, then i ran a cable to my living room through the basement. Then i used a switch to hook up my ps3, satellite reciever and have an extra cable for when i work on PCs.
