Remembering a TV Show

This question has been something I've been unable to answer for awhile. I assume we can ask these sorts of questions here.

Ok, back in either 1999 or 2000 I watched a mini series here in Australia on I think the Channel 9 network. I remember enjoying it at the time, although I was fairly young.

I can't remember a lot of details, although I know the story started off in some tropical setting, a young girl possibly moving there. We follow her throughout her life, or at least a good chunk of it.

Not much to go on, but am interested in seeing if anyone has any clues.
