Jamie Foxx "went through hell" to play Soloist - Blu-ray Forum

"The Soloist," based on a true story, tells how Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez, played by Robert Downey Jr., discovered the homeless Ayers and helped the former music prodigy, who has schizophrenia. The movie comes out Friday. Jamie Foxx suffered through his own psychological turmoil while plunging into the role of a mentally ill musician in "The Soloist," the actor said.

Foxx, 41, revealed that his bond with Nathaniel Ayers was close because of his own yearlong battle two decades ago -- triggered when "somebody slipped me something in college and I lost my mind."

Foxx, who won an Oscar in 2005 for his portrayal of music legend Ray Charles, said he consulted a psychiatrist because he feared what would happen as he took on Ayers' personality.

"I asked very foolishly, 'Can I catch schizophrenia?' and he says, 'No, you can't catch schizophrenia.' "

The doctor warned him he could experience post-traumatic stress, Foxx said.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Foxx suffered "panic attacks and bouts of paranoia" during filming.

Foxx told of one early morning incident when he got so far into Ayers' character that he called his manager and said, "I know why Nathaniel does this and I'm him!"

"I explained what I was feeling to him and he said 'Foxx, you're not Nathaniel,' " he said.

He was a guest and told this story there also, along with "apologizing" for making a joke about Miley Cyrus & a sex tape. This movie looks really good. The real guys were featured on "60 Minutes" 2 weeks ago; very interesting story.

He went through "hell" to make this but sure didnt complain about his 10 million dollar paycheck I bet. With my personal grudge aside about Foxx, this movie looks really good coming from the same director as Atonement.

i really admire actors that take on challenging and complex roles such as this, unlike many who just do shoot em ups or stupid comedies that require nearly zero talent. do i think actors should be paid as much as they are? definitely not, but that's the world of entertainment and that isn't going to change anytime soon. bravo to jamie foxx for challenging himself with roles showcasing good people/good stories. i'd rather think of him earning a paycheck for this when he's helping spread the story of a homeless man with an incredible gift than tom cruise for mission impossible 4.

Yeah, especially a $10M paycheck. Sounds like he telling this story to promote the movie though.

I can't agree more. I really appreciate it when actors take their roles seriously.

As would I, but the point of it, is that he comes out sounding like 'oh woe is me'.

I dont know but I have been involved with lots of things that didnt leave me with 2 1/2 years of ptsd...Candy azz
