Default PSP and video playback....I'm about to throw it out the window!!

Folks, maybe I'm just a "D-A" but why am I having such a hard time getting the PSP to do any kind of video playback? I thought this was a feature that PSP supported!! I have tried every way possible to play video on my PSP. I have tried downloading video from my PS3 with my PSP connected. I've tried downloading video via wireless internet through my PSP. I've tried it by connecting my PSP to my laptop. Plus I've tried connecting my digital camera directly to my PSP. No matter what I do, no matter what the video format is, the PSP always either says it's an unsupported format or it's a format that it does not recognize. Photos and audio, not a problem! Download and use these without a hitch. WTH is it with video playback?!?

No need to panic. What kind of video are you trying to play? Where is the source from? PSP will recognize avc, mp4, and mkv (if I'm not mistaken).

Before, I can really help. I need to know what the source of the video is.

Generally, make a "VIDEO" folder and put the video files in there. You may have to convert the video files to work, but understand that most digital copies unless they are from Sony will not work at all because of DRM.

Ok, what about all the videos on the Playstation Store? I have been unsuccessful it getting any of these to convert to the PSP. It will put the videos on there but I cannot view them.

You have to be careful about how you transfer the video over. If you do it from a PS3 to a PSP, it will automatically put it in the right format/place. Best option from a computer to PSP is to use Sony's PSP Media Manager software - you can find it as a free download on the net. It will automatically convert and put any videos from your computer onto your PSP - all you do is drag & drop.

I assume you're getting them from the ps3 store? I'm not sure about that. I've never tried that. But, if it doesn't work, then it has to do with the DRM, and unfortunately, just like digital copies that aren't from Sony, there's no way to get them to play.

Red Kawa's Video 9 for PSP is a great free piece of software and will convert pretty much anything into a PSP friendly format, once it's done, just cut and paste the video and thumbnail file into your PSP's VIDEO folder and you're away

PlayStation Video Store purchases and rentals contain PS3 and PSP formatted versions of the video.

Files that can be played

You can play files of the following types on the PSP™ system.
Memory Stick™ Video Format
- MPEG-4 Simple Profile (AAC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (CABAC) (AAC) and Baseline Profile (AAC)
MP4
- MPEG-4 Simple Profile (AAC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (CABAC) (AAC) and Baseline Profile (AAC)
AVI
- Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
- Motion JPEG (μ-Law)

The system cannot play video data containing video recorded for longer than approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes.

I'm not sure how much higher than 480x272 videos can be. I think they increased what's supported to 720x480 like UMD video but I'm not certain.

That is odd. All SD videos (including rentals that haven't expired yet) should be able to be transferred and played back on the PSP. HD videos won't work. Did you hook up the PSP to the PS3 with a USB cable, as opposed to sticking the Memory Stick in a card reader? Did the correct icons for the videos appear on the PSP's XMB? What version is your PSP's firmware? Did you select copy on the XMB or backup? PS Store videos (as long as they are SD) are something that definitely should work.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the max supported resolution is now 720x480.

Ahhh, that might be part of my problem! I have been downloading the high def version of the video because I honestly thought PSP supported them! I'll try the SD version!

Yeah, it's something that probably should work, but doesn't. I blame strange studio licensing issues.
