Default can i make the picture bigger

hi
i would be gratefull for any answers.
i have a 40 inch bravia (1,366x768) hd tv and ps3, when playing for example POTC 1 the picture takes up about half of the screen due to aspect ratio. if i was to invest in a 1080 full hd tv and play the same movie, would it make the picture larger on the 40 inch screen or would it still remain at about half of the screen size and only the picture would become a bit clearer?

many thanks

Cool

The aspect ratio stays the same. You could use a zoom feature(if your player or tv is equipped with one) that could eliminate the black bars, but that usually means watching a distorted image and slightly inferior PQ, plus you're actually eliminating some of the picture the director intended you to see(lose background, part of a character)

Check out the thread in this section for full screen aspect ratio movies. There's a lot to choose from.

Unfortunately, there are many different aspect ratios between movies and television. There is no one-size-fits-all for monitors. There will always be bars, unless they make a monitor that would change shape to match the current aspect ratio. That would be cool though

by the way it's not half the screen, the picture is about 75% image, 25% bars.

If you want to fill the screen you would need a display that zooms in on the 1080 image about 1.33x (75 x 1.33 = 100) (the display's screen then would be filled 100%, but you'd lose about 25% of the image). Or use a projector with a 1.33x zoom or larger, and a 2.40 wide screen for movies of that aspect ratio.

You can make the picture on your tv bigger. Just move closer to the screen
