Default quick question about PCM

When I choose PCM for audio on my player, my player just says Multi-channel, but whenever I choose DTS-HD or TrueHD, the player reads Multi-Channel/DTS-HD MA or Multi-Channel/TrueHD.

Does Multi-channel mean its outputting PCM, or is something wrong?

Thanks.

And I assume PCM down conversion should be off?

depending on the number of speakers you're using, yes. If it's just tv speakers, switch it on. If you have say a 5.1 system, off.

Probably, depending on your AVR's capabilities. What player? "Downconversion" doesn't always mean the same thing.

If you're running a surround sound set up, you'll likely want downmixing set to "off". This usually creates a 2 channel stereo downmix of the multi-channel soundtrack (though I could be mistaken).

I don't think that's what you want, unless you're running a stereo setup, or playing through TV speakers.

Yeah, I'm running a 7.1 surround sound setup.

Downconverting and downmixing are not same.

Downmixing reduces the number of channels.
Downconverting reduces the sampling rate, usually from 96Khz to 48KHz.

At least, that's the way the terms are normally used. But, sometimes CE manufacturers give those terms different meanings.

If your AVR can handle 96KHz sampling rates, then don't do any downmixing or downconverting.

If you have any external speakers/woofers etc..., then it should be turned off for better productivity.
