I'm looking for a blu-ray player than has a good quality and quiet BD drive and good 1080p upconversion. I already own a PS3 and I find the drive quiet during playback but I noticed that in 4:3 video sources such as most TV shows on DVD, the black bars on the sides are slightly wider than they should be and this is good for hiding the imperfections in 4:3 source material at the sides but still it loses a bit of the picture from the sides and I tried other blu-ray players and my PC and they don't do that. I also like to keep my game in my PS3 while I watch a blu-ray or DVD is another reason I want a dedicated blu-ray player. I only have a 32" 1080p 60Hz LCD so slightly better image quality for alot more money won't make a difference to me as it would be hard to tell the difference on a 32" screen. I tried a Panasonic BD230, and it was squealing loudly and made circular scratches on my DVD, so I returned that player. I tried an LG BP330 but found it a little too noisy during blu-ray playback. I tried a Sony BDP1100 and BDP5100, and they both had freezing and skipping problems on the same spot on one of my DVDs. I tried a Pioneer BDP150 and it made a rubbing sound on my discs when closing the tray. I might not need every ounce of image quailty I can get since I'm using a 32" screen but what I need is a player that is quiet during playback, does not scratch discs, good compatability with blu-rays, and good upconversion. I can afford the Pioneer BDP-62FD but I don't think I will notice the difference on my screen size. I can try another Pioneer BDP-150 but I'm worried it will rub my discs during closing the tray. I can try the LG BP730 and hope that it's quieter than the LG BP330. I'm willing to pay more for a player with a quiet drive while playing both blu-rays and DVDs.

LG makes one of the worst blu-ray players. You will not notice any difference in picture quality in dvd, bluray from an entry level blu-ray player to a high-end bluray player on your 32 inch tv. Keep you PS3 for watching movies as well playing games.

I just feel that I should not have to resort to using a game console for watching blu-rays and DVDs. I noticed that the PS3 has wider black bars than a normal blu-ray player on 4:3 material. For instance go to a pop-up menu on a DVD that is 4:3 material, notice that the PS3's wider black bars cut off a bit of the image from the sides. On 4:3 material that has slight imperfections at the sides, the PS3's wider black bars hide it but on other blu-ray players I tried out and in my PC, the black bars are slightly narrower and show more of the image from the sides, hence I saw imperfections at the sides on some 4:3 material. I though at first that something was wrong with the other blu-ray player that I tried out but after testing it on my Xbox 360, other blu-ray players, and PC, it turned out that the PS3 has slightly wider black bars at the sides, unless I turn off upscaling and set my TV's aspect ratio to Set by Program instead of Just Scan.

I would stay away from the LG blu ray players also since it supports 4K it doesn't make sense for you to buy it unless you have a 4K TV. Pioneer makes good blu ray players but be warned that they do not support wifi built in, you need to buy a special adaptor to get online. The adaptor costs around $99 dollars but it may be more I'm not sure.

I've got an LG BP740 blu-ray player (flagship player) and upscaled DVD on it looks fantastic.
