Default Playing HD off a DVD?

I have an HD file (1080i) recorded off cable. It's on my computer and I want to watch it on my nice TV. In it's current .avi file format it would fit on a dual-layer DVD...

Is there any way to make my PS3 play this in HD without downconverting and burning in DVD-Video format? I don't have a BD burner unfortunately.

Edit: Should mention I have Nero 7.10.1.0 full version.

Convert it to MP4 and copy it onto a MASSIVE flash drive. then transfer it to your PS3.

Any way that doesn't involve spending $130 on an 8GB USB stick?

You can burn the MP4 to a data DVD and copy it to your PS3 like you would with a memory card.

Actually, you can get an 8 gig for 70$.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the PS3 only read FAT through external drives and cards? Meaning he'd be limited in the file size?
