Watched Terminator last night and while I think the PCM track is really good for the age of the movie I did notice with some of the dialogue, mainly center channel with some of Kyle Reese's lines, that it sounds like distortion. Most of the dialogue is smooth and doesn't sound like this but some did. Just wondering if others hear it? I checked out some other movies afterwards and dialogue was fine so it must be T1's audio track. When things like this happen, particularly on older titles is it mainly due to the condition the film stock is in and maybe there isn't a better sample of that audio clip than what they have to work with?

Audio has nothing to do with the film stock used. If you are hearing any distortion, then it's most likely present in the master audio tapes they have available (which have since been cleaned up and converted to digital masters).
For some older titles, the magnetic tape can contain some hissing, but with digital tools this has mostly been cleaned up and taken care of for modern home video releases. I did not hear any noticeable distortion in T1, though, I thought it sounded pretty good. Also, John Connor is not in T1. Are you talking about T2? Last edited by benricci; 05-27-2009 at 05:32 PM. |

I just purchased T1 and watched it last night and I was thrown off by the changes they made with the music and with the sounds of the guns in the movie. The last time I watched T1 was on VHS. The sound of the gun with laser sighting sounded more like a futuristic weapon than a real gun. I wish they would have included the original audio mix also.

This is what I think it is. Like I said, most of the audio is fantastic and the rest of dialogue is very clean sounding, like a new movie sounds. There are just some lines that have a harsh tone to it making it alittle distorty sounding.

I don't think they had any plans for anything really special for T1. I know Lowry's doing a restoration of it, so I would imagine that's why they didn't put much effort into this release so they could still have something to release around T4 time, but not blow their wad for before the restoration is done.

I agree. It totally threw me for a loop as I have seen this movie at least 30 times on VHS and was dumbfounded by the remix that Sony did. Please give us back to original audio when you release it for the third time.
