Angry Is nothing sacred with these Sci-fi remakes?

I am no fan of Tom Cruise, but I love the remake of "The War of the Worlds". They took some new creatives twists and turns, but the plot was the same. The alien invasion was defeated for the same reason. But, they completely lost the design of the orignal ships. Nothing was "a nod" to the original design. No scout vessel, nothing.

In the Lost in Space movie they completely changed our beloved bubble headed booby, Robot. Nothing remotely resembling him shows up until the end of the movie. Even then, he completely lacked his original personality. They made the family a bit too dysfunctional for my taste. In an effort to make it modern, they removed all the beloved Disney-ish traits. Even Doctor Smith was no longer Chicken Little with an evil streak, but just a douch.

Thank GOD they finally relented on trying to change Gort too much in the new "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I love his new design and the fact that he was comprised of "aphids" was a nice twist. It simply didn't pay enough homage to the original idea. There is the Michael Rennie way to send a political message, and there is the Michael Moore way. This remake was too Moore-ish. I barely enjoyed it.

If they ever remake "Forbidden Planet" do NOT screw with Robby or the meaning of the movie. This is one of the mothers of modern sci-fi. In fact, if Hollywood can't do it right just leave it alone.

Hollywood seems to be fond of flooding the remake toilet to the rim, and flushing it again in hopes the water goes down this time.

I can respect the fact you don't like remakes for the reasons you mentioned above. However thats why they call them remakes. A new dircetor or writer is going to have a new idea or twist to them. Some benif, whiles other don't. I too agree with your thougths on the lost in space movie, the only thing they kept to was the idea of them getting lost, other then that the whole del was differnt too differnt. however you have to realize that these arfe going to happen. they are going to adjust to what they think the audience wants to think. Sometimes they go over board, sometimes they stay true to the original, and somtimes they commplement.

New ideas>>>rehashed old ones, always. Doesn't matter how good the movie is the fact is we've already seen us work a little harder and give us something new.

As much as I hate to say it remakes are a way of life in the entertainment business for better or worse so I guess we better get used to it.

Unfortunatly you are quite right, the only way they would stop is if they suddendly became huge box office flop's. But I don't see that happening and so they will be part of our life.

The think to remember, Hollywood as always made remakes, this is nothing new. Now a days they just are making too many of them with all of these old TV series turn into movies as well.

Well, the mid-80's remake of The Fly and the late 70's remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers were both terrific. The latest Star Trek is a "sci-fi remake" of a sort. I've never seen it, but people seem to rave about the remake of Battlestar Galactica. I thought it was a misfire, but there are those who fiercely defend the latest King Kong.

You paint with too broad a brush when you see three unsuccessful remakes and then claim all remakes are -- how did you term them? The contents of a stopped up toilet? I don't think so.

I don't think anything is sacred in Hollywood. As proof, do a Google search of Madonna + Casablanca. Everybody seems to think they can show their "originality" by putting "their" spin on a proven commodity. Why not take the novel approach of actually doing something original?

Strange concept isn't it .

Very true. They only care about money, not the quality of the movie

Hollywood has become creatively bankrupt. The enormous amount of money at stake in tentpole pictures has made each studio extremely cautious in using untested ideas. I do not think this will change anytime soon...

New Hollywood? No, its the entertainment industry. New times and new technologies enable artists to re-approach good stories. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

Try taking remakes for what they are... they're an alternative take, or an update to modern movie-goers, or an homage.

homages are far and few in between, remakes are 90% usually updates to modern movie-goers. I tend to like alternative takes on classics. Which is why i liked the new Day the Earth Stood Still... My favorite version is the original, but I see the new remake more as an updated-homage. I see it as a totally different movie too, though. So i'm not bothered with it. I see them seperately (they were made over 50 years apart or so for cryin out loud)

My point is... remakes, reboots, special editions, directors cuts, theatrical cuts, enhanced picture, re-edits, sequels, prequels and etcetera !!!DON'T DESTROY OR HINDER THE VERSION YOU LOVE!!! Too many people whine because a remake doesn't live up to their satisfaction of the original. Um, OK, so watch the original and let others enjoy the remake if they prefer that better! You still have the original, nobody has taken that away from you (not even George Lucas can take away from you or anybody :wink.

I actually like the special editions of the original Star Wars trilogy better than the originals (minus a few moments, but it's still a cleaner edit). But I still have all the originals and other versions/editions also, so I can enjoy them in their glory as well. I'm not gonna whine because a different version "exists" though...

i'm not bashing anybody, just giving my opinion on the subject of remakes.

What do you mean "new"? Nothing new about it. They've been remaking films and sequels since...a long, long time ago.

Hollywood is going to churn out what makes money, always has. Sure they have taken risks that paid off, many others have not. US consumers seem to relish and go in droves to sequels and re-hashed films with similar plot lines.

If you're tired of it, don't support it. Watch foreign films, watch Indies no one has heard about. But the majority will still be drawn to the old, tried and true Hollywood formula. If it works, why break it?

There's no need to cry over someone putting their own spin on a show, because it's just a show. If you hear about a remake or a re-imagining of a TV show that you liked and you look in the mirror and see this ---> seek professional help.
and how much professional help should someone seek when they cry because others don't like a bad movie and are willing to say what they don't like about it?

Star Trek was only sacred to winey fanboys who have nothing better to do with their time than sit in their parent's basements and complain online about something that wasn't sacred being ruined for them while crying into their genuine imitation Spock ears and James T. Kirk lunchboxes.

I'm surprised there's no outcry about not getting the official Star Trek virginity protector phaser remote with their season one boxset.
