Cool

There is some difference for sure. I prefer DirecTV HD to Comcast HD. Seen both and I believe the image quality of HD on DirecTV is better.

Of course, Blu-ray trumps it all! Get Em!

Comcast is notorious for compressing the hell out of their channels. This is why you'll notice artifacts and pixelization on HD channels, when you wouldn't see those things on the blu-ray version of the same show/movie.

This is especially evident in any scenes that involve motion or fast cuts. Macroblocking is a big issue for me with Comcast. Their standard def channels have atrocious picture quality.

This is kind of really a "Do you REALLY notice the compression difference" question ...

Is 1080p equal to 1080p? -- Answer: All HD is NOT equal when it comes to bandwidth!

Also, to clarify - Comcast does not broadcast anything in 1080p, nor do any over-the-air stations. All broadcast HD is either 720p or 1080i.

Good stuff yall!! Yes I know Blu-ray is better but just wanted to know what some of yall thought!! Like is it a big difference etc... The one good thing about cable HD as opposed to blu-ray though is.....There movies fill up the whole picture while blu-rays still have the black lines on top & bottom!! I wish blu-ray didnt do that though!! What yall think about that aspect of it???? Also I am gonna try to switch to Directv because of the NFL ticket and if the PQ is better thats all the better!! Appreciate the feedback!! Got Em!!

Sorry, you're not gonna find much support for that statement. We prefer our films to be shown in their original aspect ratios around here.

If a 2.40:1 film is shown cropped to 1.78:1 on cable (no black bars), that has modified the intended look of the picture and is not a good thing.

Do some reading on "original aspect ratio", you'll realize quickly why this is a good thing on DVD and blu-ray.

Yes, they do. I hate Comcast but I got screwed by Verizon so I'm stuck.

DirecTV now has 1080p on select OnDemand shows .

Blu-ray is still better though

That's interesting. No television networks currently broadcast in 1080p, though.

No, I wasn't trying to suggest that. They do in fact have a limited selection of feature films available, on-demand in 1080p.

TV networks currently broadcast in either 1080i or 720p, though. The point I was trying to make was that of course blu-ray is gonna be better than HD cable, because currently no stations are broadcast in 1080p (not to mention the horrible compression problem I referenced earlier)

You are correct! DirecTV OnDemand is, and can be this way as it is downloaded to your HD DVR through your Internet Connection (Internet Connection Required -- if I am not mistaken). I will confirm this though ...

I think Comcast looked better when they first started offering HD channels in my area about 8 years ago. Now it looks very compressed (different degress of quality depending on the channel).
