The Punisher: No Mercy PSN Exclusive
Okay, so the movies based on The Punisher haven't been very good, and if there have been any video games...well, we're not aware of them, and we don't wanna be, either. We're sure they exist, but they're probably not worth mentioning, right? Even so, we have faith that Zen Studios will make The Punisher: No Mercy a worthwhile title for the PSN.
Just announced today over at the official PlayStation blog, Zen Studios Managing Director Zsolt Kigyossy has revealed that this game is in development and they're not skimping on the technology just because it's a downloadable title. They're using the Unreal Engine 3 in this first-person shooter, and Kigyossy says their "main focus is to create an awesome online multiplayer experience with the style and grit from the Punisher's world, complete with characters like Jigsaw, Bushwacker, Barracuda, and even Silver Sable." He also reminds everyone that the entire studio is full of "Marvel True Believers," which hopefully means they won't sully Marvel's good name with another mediocre Punisher adaptation in another entertainment venue outside comics. Oh, and if you're wondering, this is an exclusive release for the PSN, so the Xbox Live Marketplace won't be getting No Mercy. There are exclusives and multiplatform titles online too, you know.
If you want to follow along with the progress and updates, visit the game's official site from time to time. Hopefully, we'll get more game details soon, along with a release date. And by the way, "Zsolt" may be one of the most kick-ass first names in history...and the fact that he works at Zen Studios makes it even more kick-ass.
Well, it's certainly a good idea to put this on the PSN, and not try for a full $60 release. We can pretty much guarantee that it would've been a miserable failure, but as a downloadable title, this one could be very worth your while.
Zen Studios has announced that Punisher: No Mercy will be hitting the PSN this spring, and it could be an appreciated addition to the Store. It uses the Unreal Engine 3 - what doesn't these days? - and if you couldn't guess, you're gonna be blowing tons of crap up. Here's one picture and you can see the rest of the gallery over at Joystiq. Past games in the series haven't been very good, but this time, you'll probably be able to pick up Frank Castle's latest quest for revenge for an agreeable price. So far, we've seen full downloadable titles range in from $7.99 to $14.99 in price, and for being able to stay home and spend a fraction of a normal new release...well, that's a major bonus. No Mercy isn't about to compete with Killzone 2, and now, it doesn't need to. In short, this might be the first Punisher game that won't insult you.
We'll bring you more details as they become available, and we hope to see the solidified release date soon. The PSN is getting some good stuff in 2009, isn't it? And remember, this is a PSN exclusive, too...
